Personally what the 'trainer' said would exhaust you. Might leave you with less weight, while also curled up on the floor.
Stick to a full body workout, 3 times a week.

I would do the workout Mon Wed Fri and do cardio on Tues and Thurs and maybe even a Saturday (keeping this lighter).
Keep the reps and sets of the routine something like 4x6 or maybe even 5x5 (3 working sets though, so in theory 3x5). Fullbody workouts are great for keeping muscle mass, and adding it infact. Then - you calorie intake by around 500 for the first week. This may lead to 2000 calories, if you start to lose weight, stick to this until you have reached your weight.
