Low Carb/High Fat Diets and Boxing/MMA etc

I'll try and be concise.

For the last year ive been eating approx 200g+protein/100g fat/60g carbs per day and been doing well with it for weights and HIIT.  The main carb source is one banana after training along with small amounts from whey, veg and nut butters.

I started boxing again last week which went well but towards the end of the week was struggling for energy.  Last night my body wasnt really responding to what I wanted to do in terms of speed and snap.  Afterwards it occured to me that I trained at 7pm and my last proper carb source was one banana at 11am the day before.

Does anyone have any experience with training similarly and can offer advice.  I did some reading last night and am thinking of having 25-30g glucose/dextrose along with whey 15 mins prior to training.  A can of regular red bull seems to fit the bill here.  At the moment Im drinking a can of sugar free fake Red Bull beforhand so this is an easy substitute.  I gather that a fast acting carb 15 mins prior is better than a lower GI carb like sweet potato 45-60 mins before.

Any advice is appreciated.

Experiment with both.  It will come down to how you respond based on your insulin sensitivity (which should be pretty high due to your low carb background).

Personally, I prefer slow carbs before (so porridge or a sandwich) but depends on the duration of your session.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on.

See I find this really difficult being a vegetarian, so for me it's protein and carbs with low fats. This would be interesting to know how your body reacts though as mentioned above with you hardly eating any carbs.

Without going into science and speaking purely from personal experience, mma/boxing is explosive and uses pretty much every muscle group. I tried to do the DP keto diet, which was great for cutting the weight down but after the first 10/15 mins of the lesson I was gassed.

I would use some slow carbs 20 mins before hand like oatcakes and some whey if you are on the move from work to class or something.

I would probably check out BBW Prime with caffeine - this has got decent ingredients which would be good before boxing or drink during the class.

Once your body becomes conditioned over time this will help as well.

Id always thought that a lower GI carb 60-90 mins prior would be the best idea but from reading around it seems that people who train some kind of fighting sport on a keto diet go for glucose 15 mins prior.  I prefer training on an emptier stomach so like the idea of this. It seems to fit in with a TKD diet but i dont see myself as eating a low enough level of carbs to go keto.

Will give it a try on Thursday see how it goes.  If its still not enough I can always change the meal before that from high fat/protein/low carb to high protein/higher carb/low fat  as well as consuming the glucose prior to training.

are you doing boxing/mma for enjoyment or with an aim to compete?

if you're doing it instead of HIIT along with weights then I wouldnt worry that much and keep to pace you are comfortable with in the class.

if you're still going keto style i would look at BBW Prime, I dont think it would chuck you out of keto and ingredients are all quality.

also i remember Papa mentioning he used this (I could be wrong) but the profile looks good.

Too old to compete seriously now but still want to spar to a reasonable level within the club itself.  Its produced some genuinely good fighters (a silver medal olympian and commonwealth gold medalist) so i can still box to a high standard without leaving the club and if i choose to take it further then hopefully therell be a way.

Actually coming to the end of some BBW prime just now.  Youre right it has next to no carb content id rather keep the pre wo formulas for weight days though.

oatcakes and some whey then it is, but the oak cakes will probably throw you out of keto and that area might not be as good.

surely you could just up the fats as if you're body is using fat for fuel then this would be the solution?

Not bothered about keto doubt im in it anyhow.  Will probably get the electric scales out and get on myfitnesspal for a week to check how much fat im actually eating because i think im below 100g at the moment, might need to up them a bit on non boxing days.
