Lunges, why not?

I just tried doing lunges at school today, only had 30lbs in each hand. All I got to say is OUCH! My legs were totally dead by the third set.
And when I asked my teacher she said "Lunges are a great excercise, they hit the legs really hard, hits the nervous system, all the stabilizing muscles and it's also almost a cardiovascular exercise."

So, how come I don't see Lunges mentionned more on here then? Is it not good for hypertrophy? Or is it simply that squats are so much more superior that the lunges usually just take a quiet 2nd place?

Lunges are great, but probably you're in so much pain partly because your muscles aren't used to the movement. Probably squatting is a better mass builder, as more weight can be used.
I do fairly unconventional lunges, all the reps on one leg then swap, doing it the traditional way I'd have to reduce the weight to avoid losing my balance

do you have a 'shut up and squat' t-shirt on.....and just drop the bar when you've finished your set?.....oh and rap music blaring from a building 100m away?

(would be really confusing if you haven't seen the film)

That's what teacher had me doing, 8 reps for right, then 8 for left.
Makes sense, more weight = more mass :P

But don'T squats work mainly quads as to where lunges are more towards hamstrings?

Do you find it hard to balance Kitty? I do them in a power rack, just in case, although I've never actualy fallen over
I also often forget which leg I've just done if I get distracted!

Lunges are good - but they aren't the daddy of mass builders like squats, and don't develop absolute strength like squats.
Great for developing a level of power though (Think of a sprinter coming out of the blocks)

I think lunges are great and seem to hit all muscles in the legs.

i tend to topple over if i lunge with bar.
i like to do step up lunges at the end of leg workout: front foot on step, lunge, come up so that i'm standing on the one legged on the step and i bring the back knee up as high as poss. not a mass builder but i enjoy them.
going to try reverse lunges tomorrow. bet i end up falling over.

lunges are good indeed... i prefer to do them with a barbell than with dumbells, but either way they're good. if you want a hella puke-fest workout, do your squats like normal (read: like a madman) then immediately do a quick set of DB lunges right after. it's a killer superset that will mess you up hard... eheh

i don't like lunges much cause i always forget to bend my back leg when i'm doing them. i like doing squats a lot better. lunges seemed to feel pretty good when i do them right. i'm sure they work though or people wouldn't do them.
