Making a movie on the cheap

Has anyone here ever made a movie or know someone else who has? I'm talking cheap amateur stuff. Not Porn. I mean telling a proper story or even a comedy.

I imagine digital would be the only way to go. Equipment wise, what would you need to do it?

What camera?
What mics?
What editing software?

If its a film , use real film

that can then be encoded later to digital and edited , but you cant beat the look of real film over digi cams

But the cost is prohibitive is it not? And then you have to convert it to digital to post it on youtube etc, which begs the question, why not just go digital in from the start?

from what ive seen and it was quite a few years ago , film footage was miles better  to digi footage and its looked far more pleasing

although looking at this vid

it seems they have gt digi to look more comparable to film , film is cost prohibitive especially if you waste any , but in my mind stuff like Eastenders is digi and classic films like ET are on film , ask yourself what ET would have look like if it was filmed on digi

First question - what type of Movie?  What is your end target audience?  If you can answer those two alone then you should know what to use for the format.

After that, there are still a million and one questions to answer your final deliverable and the route to get there.

Perhaps a little ambitious but I want to make a proper film, albeit on a shoestring budget.

I am considering a dramatisation of a day in the life of someone who suffers from OCD. It would be a serious film but with lots of black humour.

Realistically I'd expect to simply be able to put in online, however if there was any chance at all that it could be shown to a wider audience such as film festivals etc then that would be great.

The budget for equipment could be no more than 10k, although I wouldn't want to buy equipment that had a huge learning curve. The simplest equipment to use that gets the job done is what I need.

Aren't they photography cameras rather than film cameras though?

After Effects is kind of what Photoshop is to photos.

Its Movie editing, effects software.

I'm pretty sure that I'll decide to get final cut pro. I'm not a Mac fanboy but the mac platform is the one I am most familiar with. I just need to get a camera, mic etc. I have no idea where to start.

Does it really matter? Making films is about story telling. There have been documentaries made on iPhones that have been highly critically acclaimed and won many awards. Learn how to tell a story first.

few years ago few mates of mine answered an advert in the back of a local paper to be in a film. They turned up to some students filming a comedy slasher movie. I watched it after it was quiet funny even tho it was filmed on the cheap. they worked for free just for the fun of it.
