Male gym members attitudes to female members : what's your opinion

Posting this on the back of an issue of someone (female) I know who has had a bad experience in a private gym from male members. This person is a serious trainer and competes.

The gym in question had a change of management and what used to be "men downstairs women upstairs" kind of place was basically changed to a mixed gym. The attitude of the male members was not very welcoming to this person even though she's the type to get her head down and focus on what she's doing. They defaced a photograph of her and the management basically didn't want to know! She has now left the gym, mainly due to the attitude of the management I'd say rather than the members.

For the male members particularly of "hard core gyms"......be honest........how would you feel if your gym changed from being men only to one of mixed gender?

For female members.....do you ever feel intimidated (or other) training in a "hard core gym"?

Personally, even though I now train at home, I always felt more welcome in a smaller gym than the commercial gyms. I've usually found the more serious a guy is into his training the more welcoming they tend to be.

I've always trained at spit and sawdust gyms, been at TNT Reading for the last 5 years and in that time i've never seen anyone down on the ladies that train there, we have a few female keep fitters, competitive BB'ers and powerlifters, all are treated with respected and definitely give as good as they get in a nice banter way, encouraged and supported....In fact we wouldn't have it any other way.

To any normal person that's quite obviously bang out of order.

My mates gym I train is a proper PLer set up, spit and saw dust, a few show pony types like me and a fair few novices. There are also (or were) quite a few testosterone boys, loud brash, talking about their weekend conquests and basically not caring about their surroundings seeing as they pay their way like everyone else. They had their memberships stopped. One or two then left due to the gyms 'change of direction' which was nonsense, they've had to broaden their market appeal to keep the gym running and earn a living, appealing to JUST people like us they can't afford to keep the place open so we've lost one or two members who even made me feel embarrassed to be a serious trainer so that women, youngsters and newbies aren't put off.

I chat with and get on with many of the others, young girls (don't say it), elderly couples, there are a couple of ladies who come for massage once a week, must be 70s, who have a good old natter with me every week

I've found this too.....it's the younger boys that tend to fit this category. I'm not talking the serious test lads that are probably the biggest in there and usually the competitive ones but the ones in for recreational training for their weekend conquests!!

In my experience when you're in a gym it's usually wise to assume that everyone is an 4rsehole until proven otherwise.

Yeah..... unfortunately we have (or had) a few of the classic stereotypes. Loads of gear to get big (altho far from BBer size), loads of coke and alcohol for their weekend massive (which is why they need so much gear to train on) but (at risk of offending others) are your classic "oi, oi!" type of 'bloke'... F*** this C*** that at the top of their voice, walking around like they're 3x bigger than they are. It was genuinely embarrassing as a fellow 'man' and if having them around meant that 10 people a month were put off joining or left then something has to give.

It's not like the gym has become a mainstream fitness gym altho there is a more fitness type set up upstairs.... there's a young girl in most morning when I'm in hoping to get a double BW DL of 110 who trains hard, she just doesn't lift hundreds of KG at a time but she's more serious than half of those "oi oi" lads and more pleasant to talk to

Re: Male gym members attitudes to female members : what's your opinion 2017/09/06 18:07:12 (permalink)
The original gym I trained at in the early 80's wasn't male only but due to its primative nature and being frequented by only competitive bodybuilders and door staff didn't have any female trainers, other than Fatima Whitbread who for all intents and purposes then wasnt "technically" a female lol. Pretty much all of the gyms I trained at were mixed but again due to time, type of gym and trainers you didn't see any females (Len Sells, Bill Stevens, Roy Perrotts Estuary Gym etc...) and to be honest I preferred it.

Bodyworks in Tottenham in the late 80's early 90's was as far as I know a men only gym. I don't or didn't have a problem with female trainers but preferred the above gyms, their set ups and atmosphere.

But in your case Kitty whether the guys felt it was right or wrong it's up to the owner and pretty childish at best re the actions of the male trainers there.

When I did train at a hardcore gym for a few months the women seemed to be on the whole hard trainers and respected for it. Now I'm in a regular gym, well equipped as it is, the same seems to apply - ladies there to work are respected and left alone - BUT - "gym thots" who walk back and forth fetching tiny dumbells so they can bend over a few more times do get sneered at. I go real early in the morning so I mostly avoid seeing the type of lads you speak of, six of them crowded round two benches with dumbells scattered everywhere, looking at phones and nudging each other every time a woman walks past.

I tend to go to the gym with the Mrs (Although she's usually doing cardio or light work). Always been fine when we're there together.

However she went on her own a couple of weeks ago and one bloke was trying to chat her up lol.

In my opinion people should act professionally and let others get on with it - male/female, big/small.

There are a lot of egos floating around the gym so it's probably that. "Billy big bollocks" who can bench 100kg after taking more steroids than hot dinners and wants everyone else to know about it.

No problem with ladies training, as has been said, great to see a dedicated lady, most people that annoy me in gyms are guys, but then I train at a crappy commercial fitness first most of the time, and it attracts idiots just p*ssing about which is annoying.

Serious gyms are way better as no one seems to annoy you as the majority seem to understand, not to do annoying things while you're training.

Most women just mind their own, in the gyms I've been, and I like that, as I just do the same.

However their is one powelifter lady at my gym, who has a good physique, but seems to think she has to correct everyone on their bench, squat and deadlift form when she's in the gym, which is really annoying, then when I watch her perform her lifts I'm not overly impressed.

I feel like some powerlifters get married to the powerlifting way of training, when it really isn't the be all and end all.

If you love something let it go,if it comes back to you it's yours,if it doesn't it never was.

Personally I have never seen a gym where women are not welcome in any capacity,  By the say so of the members or the attitude of the members.   There are, however 2-3 in the area that are either "no men" period, or have Ladies only zones or times.  I really think these gyms perpetuate the myth that men and women need to be kept separate.
I honestly think that equality flourishes in the gyms I frequent, In the early days many were scared to come into the place, but to be honest non-training males were at that time too!  Once through the door they were welcomed and supported like any other member.  In fact many would say they felt safer and more accepted in our gym than they ever did at bigger gyms.

As Kitty suggests, I think the guys that are seriously into training see the girls as fellow trainers and respect them as such, however the "laddie" types that have infiltrated gyms over the last decade or so have a different agenda.  This does work both ways though and from behind a gym counter I have been in a great position to observe behaviour -  certain ladies will intentionally position themselves around the "lads" in the gym, and then even come up to the counter and complain that the lads on the bench are letching at her .... while she is bending over in front of their bench for some reason, miles away from the matted space where most people bend over.

I don't think it comes down to a male/female thing,  its more people that come to train vs jerks who come to flirt, letch and 'pose', sadly this encourages a type of behaviour & creates and environment which can be tedious for serious trainers.

The defacing of the picture is annoying though, We had pictures of a member that was an IFBB Pro (Bikini. Bodyfitness) by the counter, and I must have fielded thousands of comments about it.  I think I can count the positive ones on one hand,  Most were either "Eurrggh, that's disgusting", "I would/wouldn't f*** it", "I bet she has a bigger cock than me", "She looks like a man"   -  I'd like to say these were all the jerk types, but it was mostly from serious trainers.  People that were taking ****loads of drugs and training their nuts off for some reason, which I assumed was to look like the lady in the photo!!?.

I think Bodybuilding is very egotistical, and sadly many get jealous very easily.

Where I live we have very few serious spit and sawdust type gyms, I think we have 2 in the entire city? They're a pain to get to at the time I train so I just don't bother. I cannot stand these arrogant ***** that seem to be floating around gyms at the moment. Loud, leave all their equipment out, making comments at girls every time one walks past. They're pretty much chavvy as*holes who want to be seen going to the gym, if I owned my own gym and wasn't financially dependent on the chav types, I'd warn them and then ban them if they didn't sort themselves out. I feel sorry for alot of women in the gym, rarely can they train without some creepy loser oogling and being a pest (I'm sure they're some that love it).

Fabulous to see the support for anyone male or female who are serious about their training. I think most of us appreciate it's the recent bellend type trainer. I also agree with the point about the females who flaunt themselves and then have the audacity to complain, if you don't want the comments then cover up, simple! I certainly would expect both types of behaviour mainly in a commercial gym but this being a private gym I would have expected a better attitude!

To be honest Ive never seen anything like that. I trained on one extremely hardcore east Belfast sawdust gym, mostly seemed like a paramilitary only place, they had some women training in there and no one was saying a thing. I think I did 3 sets and got the **** outta there.
What you describe is well out of order no matter where it would happen.
