Martial Arts and weights

I have recently taken up muay thai and would like to adapt my weight training around it to benefit from it for maximium performance as i would like to compete eventually..at present im trying to drop some blubber and im doing HIIT cross training on the treadmill/x trainer/ heavy bag work and skipping which is going really well and the blubber is coming off real well and my fitness has improved alot.

Im just stuck on how to approach weights, I am at present doing 5x5s 3 days per week and cv work the other 3.

any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I'm no expert but from reading other similiar posts I would say that training 3 days a week with weights is too much if you are focusing on martial arts (especially since 5x5 is quite intense). You probably want to concentrate on a two day weight program low reps with the focus on explosive lifting, compound movements and possibly some olympic lifting. Do a search for martial arts on this site and you will find quite a bit of advise also have a look in the power and strength forum.

    Hope that's some help

Good advice by Jazz. Try some powerlifting.
