Men United Lift 4 Life - MT sponsored event

Organiser - MuscleTalk member Andy (ACdood)

I submitted a charity event idea to Prostate Cancer UK early this year and have since had the idea approved by the charity. The plan is to hold a 1 day event in gyms across the country where participants pay a donation of £5 or more at the gym (or show proof of sponsorship for the equivalent via just giving smartphone app). This entitles them to contribute towards the total amount of weight lifted for their gym by choosing any of the following, or all if they feel up to it:

  • Bench press
  • Leg press
  • Squat
  • Deadlift

Each participant will get 2 minutes at each station to complete as many reps as is possible on that particular equipment. The aim is that each gym keeps a total on the weight lifted and submits their total at the end of an 8 hour period. All totals will be combined and from this a nationwide total will show how much weight we can lift as a nation in support of Prostate Cancer UK. We will be literally raising the bar............... Cheesy I know.

I am not from any organisation, my reason for wanting to do this is I lost my grandfather to prostate cancer a few years back and there was a lot of things that he could've benefitted from with the work that these guys are doing regarding supporting sufferers and research into this disease. This combined with my love for training brought about my idea, and here we are.

If you are a gym owner or a trainer and would like to get involved please get in touch with any questions you have; email Andy at andy.f.cavell@gmail.comPM me & follow the Twitter page @MENutdLift4Life.

Just want to say a massive thank you to Muscle Talk for sponsoring this event.

It has been decided that whilst taking part in the event on the 2nd of August there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place lifters. Prizes will be supplied by Muscle Talk and are for MT forum members only.

1st prize - Muscle Talk t.shirt & forum bragging rights
    2nd prize - Muscle Talk t.shirt
    3rd prize - Muscle Talk t.shirt

I will start a competition thread before the event and this will be where all entries should be posted.

The way this will work is:

    1. Record & upload a video of all 4 of your lifts showing weight lifted
    2. Attach screenshot of email confirmation of donation to https://www.justgiving.com/Lift4Life/ or show clearly on video you making donation at your local gym
    3. Really give it some to earn your MT prize

Whether you come 1st or 1000th, just by taking part in the event you are part of something amazing that could change the lives of 1 in 8 men (the ratio of men that will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives).

Keep up the training and get ready for the 2nd of August - Men United Lift 4 Life - AT A GYM NEAR YOU!!!

    Cheers

    Andy

I went for the big lifts pal, as we have some serious weight to shift for a potential massive total.

As for smith machine/free squats I'd say that is up to each person/gym. Some may prefer one over the other or may be limited by physiology.

Great to have you on board with this, if you require any information to take to your local gym please let me know and I'll send this over via email straight away.

    Cheers

I'll get involved mate. Gym doesn't have a leg press though, so might sub in OHP and negatively affect my total!

I think this has the potential to be a great for the charity and for lifters to have a go at a competition that usually wouldn't. But leg press? It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever to have this as one of the lifts. Every leg press is different and then you have people quarter repping on them lol. You need to upload rules to each lifts as well mate.

    Cheers buddy,

There has been a number of requests for Shoulder press instead of leg press. I think this is fine and as such will make this lift an option of either. This will be amended on the website and then individuals can choose.

The rules as to whether the lift counts as a full rep will be down to the gym that is hosting the event as it is their total it will be going on. Will be kind of hard to police as well other than videos.

I'd say bench press has to go from the chest to extension, same with shoulder press, squat has to go to 90' or beyond, same with leg press, deads have to be from the floor to upright.

But I would've said that most people wouldn't sell themselves short by counting partials as reps............

August isn't that far pal, imagine how much training you can get in before the big day!!💪

Tell your mate to go to the website on my signature and email me via the sign up page. I'll get back to him right away. Failing that if you pm me I'll give you my mobile number that you are more than welcome to pass on.

Just got another sponsor on board so may be some supplement prizes also.

Exciting times pal. And all for a good cause. Bonus
