Muscle, Guts and beer!

I have been training for a few years now.
I have always Enjoyed the odd beer or bottle of Red wine.
I work off shore and have not had a drink in over a month which is good for me.

My diet is not always clean and i do carry a little bit of a belly. I have uped my cardio and have been trying to get a bit leaner. Its not always possable to keep my diet clean off shore.

If i clean my diet up is it possable to put on some muscle while staying relativly lean?
And can i still have a drink?

Do any you guys enjoy drink. Dose it effect your goals.

Drink has a huge effect on muscle building - it upsets the hormone balance which prevents anabolism.

Everyone is different, but with me if I avoid alcohol I put on lean muscle much faster.

This said, at the start, I could drink and gain without probleem, but plateaued. Dropping the alcohol pushed me past the plateau. Now I have a couple of beer when I go to a gig (maybe once every 6 weeks) and the odd glass of wine in an evening (once a fortnight)

Like you i to had no problem gaining at the start.
My mate i train with only has a drink now and then and he is in better shape than me.
But i have a large social circle of friends who get wasted every chance they get.

There is no way i can stop drinking as i do enjoy it. But if i can cut right down. and just have a glass of wine or something i know i will improve.
I have not had a drink for a while now and i feel better. healthier.

It's a sad, sad fact that alcohol really doesn't do your muscle-building endeavours any favours.

I posted a while back with my crushing discovery that the calories in one pint of Kronenbourg take over half-an-hour of tedious slog on the bike to work off.

Not had a drink in a long time. But that will be me cutting down big time.

Generally don't drink much at all. Not directly because of bb but because I don't particularily crave drink.
I crave things like burgers, pizza or cakes or something instead.
I also generally prefer drinking pepsi max to alcohol.

That said, sometimes I can get a very strong taste for Polish and especially Czech beer. I'm an all the way person, either I'm getting hammered or not drinking at all.
I wouldn't only drink 1 or 2 beers because it lowers your test levels, meaning more fat and less muscle, before any extra calories are ever absorbed.

Is there any proof of this huge degenerative effect alcohol has on building muscle?

I don't recall the exact explanations, I know it depresses the left ventricle of the heart which has a knock on effect.
(part of the reason why mixing things like cocaine and alcohol has such dramatic effects)

Aggressive behaviour in alcoholics can apparently be explained by a sudden and rapid release of testosterone into specific regions of the brain.

I'm going by memory here so sorry for inaccuracies.

    BUMP for more info.

Not sure of hormonal effects - But I don't really need to see a study to convince me that alchohol and it's effects aren't really going to contribute favourable to a bodybuilding lifestyle

What about cream cakes ? show me a study that CONCLUSIVELY links fresh cream slices to muscle loss ? - if you can't then are we to assume that cream cakes aren't going to hinder bodybuilding progress ?

I see your point and i can see that having a hangover may inhibit your workout, but i was curious to see in writing somewhere this huge devastating effect alcohol has on muscle gains.

Are you the principle that if you lift weights then anything bad for you should be avoided at all costs?

alcohol for me = loss of inhibitions = smoking, eating crap and execessive coke sniffing. Not proud of it, but thats the truth, turns me into a different person. therefore, I've decided to knock it on the head for a while at leats until I can get to grip with my willpower (or lack of)

    Not at all mate

I have often seen a couple of (successful ) strongmen out the back of the gym having a fag (mentioning no names , as one of them posts on MT )
Trying to tell people smoking will ruin their gains is a bit difficult with all that going on !

I don't know, I have spent a fair bit of time drinking in the past , and a fair bit of time training - and I just can't see that the drinking lifestlyle fits in very well when you are training seriously

I see your point also - It would be great to see a study , but it is more the actual effects , lifestyle and side effects of the alcohol rather than any biochemical effect that concerns me

But then I suppose you could still go out , have a drink at the weekend and make *some* progress , but it would be obvious to me that you would make more progress without the booze

Airborne, I thought you smoked a fair bit but your still able to keep up in terms of the running iirc.

I don't think smoking will inhibit your natural chemistry in the same way that alcohol will, in fact if you read the nicotine article by PB, then smoking could even be considered beneficial.

The doctors tell us to drink one glass of wine or 1 glass of beer per day, so it must be bad for bodybuilding.
