My ISP is Rubbish

As per title. Every weekend without fail, the internet goes very slow and actually cuts out. Have replaced everything this side of the socket but to no avail. Reckon it could be down to the ISP choking speeds. I pay for 8mgeabits, get 3 on a good day. Rarely gets to 1 on the weekend, has often been 0.5. Though it becomes very intermittant. It is only costing £9 a month though.

So who are you with? What does it cost you? What speed are you paying for and what do you actually get? are there any limitations to downloads?

All of them have a Limited use policy if you're on torr sites they know fine well, but will usually give you about 3-5 GB before throttleing it down, then they might at peak times throttle it down between 5pm to about 10/ 11 pm.

Its utter and complete BS, ISP's in the UK are an utter and total fcuking disgrace with the amount of false advertising they get away with, especially BT and Virgin, BT being worse as they kept on using possibly the most oldest dated heap of sh!te copper network in the western world.

Talking of BT, rather fed up with them.  Paying for a service up to 20Mb (yes I appreciate the use of the words up to) but most days it is so slow it's pathetic.  Last week I did a speed test and it was 0.1Mb... WTF??!!!   It's slow today as well.   Will be phoning them on Monday to complain ... although have a feeling I will get some script-reading gimp in a call centre.

I dont understand why the phrase 'up to' is legal for advertising purposes - at the very least if used at all it should be qualified by quoting what a typical speed is.

In no other field of business would this be legal or acceptable. If I hired you to do a job for me that was going to take a few days, and told you I would pay you "Up to £1000 on completion" and then, when you finished, I actually paid you £20, you'd sue my @ss off... and you'd (quite rightly) win.

They should be made to qoute national averages, saying that ill be getting the Virgin 50mb line in soon, and if they try anything with that the next call they make will be to come and take it all out.

Got Virgin fibre optic at home - amazingly fast, reliable etc. Unfortunately we have BT at work and its been down for around 4 hours a day the past couple of days, you can imagine how this impacts our company!!

Oh and by the way they don't actually have a complaints department as we found out after ~1 hour of being passed around the call centre yesterday

I've just received a Virgin Super Hub (made by Netgear) for £30.
Below is what I get for £20pcm. This is to/from the London TranceFM server. The Maidenhead XILO server gives the same speed with 16ms ping.

Knowing BT they probably got rid of the complaints department to stop everybody complaining to it.

they're the worst company in the world (and,  ironically for a telecoms company, almost impossible to get through to on the phone) and I wouldnt go back to them if they offered me free internet forever. seriously. Id rather pay to be with someone else than be with them for free.

About 1.5 hours! EDIT: My previous 20mbps service gave a consistent speed.
People may be getting throttled due to the excessive watching of HDTV online.

Wish I'd looked at Virign now (not sure why I didn't) - it's not just the speeds, it does keep dropping the connection intermittently which is really annoying when I'm uploading stuff to the server and typed it all out etc, pressed save and then I notice the broadband is down, goddam crap!

TBH my 10mb line has been fine buts its had problems wher ethe connection just died, throttled and capped.

We are moving up to the newer line/ box soon but the baords are filled with poeple with big problems with them when VM dont upgrade their capping allowence at peak times, so they get thrittled and it doesnt go back up again.

We're with Sky, pay £10 a month and typically get a 3mb speed.

Use a few hundred gigabytes of bandwidth a month. Could get the same deal for £7.50 but would mean signing up for 18 months, and since we are hoping to pay more and get gibre broadband in the near future i will not be signing up.

Im with talk talk and it slows down big time at peak times, but I guess it's got nothing to do with the isp you are with more to do with where u live and the phone exchange.

It's all legit* of course! I can quite easily do a lot of uploading and downloading through normal ftp and email/web submissions, certainly more than a lot of higher end broadband packages. Maybe not so much lately as i have not had that much work on and haven't been tinkering as much.

What do you mean - frivolous with their customer info?

*if legit means that it may include some peer2peer type downloads

Actually it's to do with a variety of things - traffic shaping, bandwidth management, capping speeds, changing contention ratios, line length, weather conditions, how busy the equipment at the exchange is.

Local Loop Unbundling sometimes means that other ISPs just share the kit in the exchange, but it can mean that an ISP has it's own kit in the exchange, and isn't affected by how busy the mainstream BTOpenworld routing kit is used and by how many customers. Broadband speeds are subject to a significant number of factors, not just where you live.

    What's wrong with their router?

    £9.25/mth for 20Mb Virgin Media.
Never had any issues, always get a solid 20Mbps.

So paying for 20, getting 20.
