My girlfriend and slimming pills

Hey ladies,

Just wanted to post up on here for some advice if you don't mind.

My girlfriend, like many girls, wants to get her body in shape for the summer bikini showdown!

Trouble is she's lazy and wants results quick and as easy as possible.

I guess u can see where this is leading right.

Her friend took some slimming pills for two weeks and claimed that she shed off the majority of her body fat and kept it off.
I'm not entirely sure what the slimming pills were made out of but judging by what she experienced - increased energy as if she was on speed, supressed appetite...i'm guessing the pills had Ephedrine in them.

What are your experiences with slimming pills with or w/out ephedrine?

What can she hope to expect from taking such pills? Her diet is not great and i've told her to get this sorted first but she seems to have her mind set on slimming pills. I know everyone will react differently but can she expect much if her diet isn't great?

What can i advise her to do?

Pills alone wont do anything, combine pills with correct diet and she will get results. She will get good enough results from just diet and cardio. Pills really arnt needed, all you need is calorie deficit and cardio 3-4times a week! Ive used these so called fat burners, they are like a mild natural ECA stack and they send my Heart rate sky high and make me feel Jumpy and a bit depressed! I dont like them. I think they do increase your metabolism, but they also increase your body temp, well mine did, not entirely sure whether they can be healthy at all.

Her friend was probably just in a calorie deficit and took the pills, and put the results down to the pills!

Thanks for the reply american dream.

Any advice as to what cardio would be suitable. I've told her mornings on an empty stomach may be best but she hasn't warmed to this idea. She does go to the gym around twice a week - 10 mins bike, 10 mins treadmill, 10 mins cross trainer, 10 mins weights. Is this ok?

She goes two hours after her last meal - should this be longer? Does performing cardio just two hours after the last meal make the cardio 'feuled'? If so is her workout just making her fitter and not aiding fat loss greatly - i'm sure in the long run a fitter person will burn fat more efficiently but i hope you know what i mean.

I don't think anyone in the right frame of mind would recommend anything unless she's prepared to put some effort in. Too many people today want quick results and until they sit up and realise that it takes time and effort (in most cases) then the current levels of obesity will continue to rise.

You have given us no personal details about her so how do we know she's overweight? IMO it would be inappropriate and irresponsible for us to help her in the circumstances you have given.

    Sorry if that's harsh

Am with Kitty on this. If it was as easy as popping a few pills we'd all be doing it! Weight loss is tough but not impossibe. Your girlfriend will get out of it what she puts in...no more...no less.

Ok, I understand the ethical and moral issues of not wanting to perscribe anything without full knowledge of her situation.

As much as I have tried to steer her away from the pills at least for the moment, her friend keeps telling her to just go for it - and that she most probabaly will.

    She's currently looking at

    http://shop.healthandleisure.uk.com/product_info.php?products_id=53&osCsid=d0d5b269527ae76c714fd077572351f0

    a pill called Thermatrim plus.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of these pills? Can't seem to find an ingredient list but they say they are ephedra free.

She likes the look of these ones too. lol

Slim bombs! - can't find an ingredient list here either, says it's a blend of natural herbs - what are these likely to be? (if there is such an answer)

I think the most usefull approach to these kinds of supplements is to view them as products that will enhance the effects of her diet and training, that of course means they will 'enhance' a bad diet & very little training but she would get much better results by cleaning up her diet & training intelligently.

it's not a crime to be lazy lots of people are and always have been, it's just that now in modern western culture we have technology to take all the exertion out of life, being lazy wasnt always the option it is now.

Maybe some gradual changes of diet and a form of exercise that she enjoys so that it wouldnt seem a chore?

    Thanks for the advice Medusa.

I am slowly but surely getting her to realise that if she does take the pills she may as well sort her diet oout too in order to get the ost out of them. It's not that she eats bad food, fast food all the time, it's more the fact that her diet is inconsistent and sporadic.

If you don't mind advising Medusa, how can she train smarter?

At the moment she trains around 2-3 times a week

    10 mins bike
    10 mins steady treadmill
    10 mins steady x-trainer
    10 mins weights

I've advised her to eat a meal 2 hours before containing protein, healthy fats and a small amount of carbs e.g chicken avacado and 2 oatcakes - good or bad

I've also told her to eat a balanced meal afterwards with little fat especially saturated. Also told her the importance of a good brekkie and eating more, smaller meals often.

Anything else that would help would be greatly appreciated.

prob the best approach, will come across as trying to help her rather than being critical which may well make her defensive (well thats what i do if he criticises me)

I see Kitty's point & I tend to react negatively to people who seem 'lazy' by my standards, but the truth is I'm weird & obsessive

Looks to me as if those tabs contain some caffeine or the herbal equivalent of, perhaps some herbal ephedrine as well, she may find it easier to exercise whilst on them as they'll give a bit of 'oomph'

well, the best exercise is something you enjoy & can stick to, so any cardio that fits the bill (I'm not the expert on cardio, the most I do is walk to my car ) but muscle tissue has a MUCH higher metabolic rate than fat so I'd always recomend some good basic heavy resistance training, whole body twice per week as a minumim...of course women are not always receptive to the idea of increasing muscle...

    Thanks for the advice.

I've treid to convince her to increase the amount of weight training but she trains with her freind who thinks she knows best.
They say they want to tone up but do not realise that toning up includes putting on some muscle.

    Thanks again.

I work as a personal trainer Kelroy and it must be my most asked question as women make up about 70% of my clients.

My sisters the worst she misses breakfast barely ever does any training eats total crap then goes on a starvation diets all the time, how many times ive told her is behond belief.
If she does any training she no way allows me to weigh her to track progress/motivate (and we are really close)

Then regulary she has bought some magic diet pills of ebay which is gonna change everything.

By the way that Thermotrim product in the link above where hell in that webpage does it list its ingredients. It amazes that someone will buy this product just cos its "Direct from the USA".

The only pill/tablet I would use myself is the ECA stack (please note I dont advise clients or your girlfriend to take the ECA stack its just something I occassionally use) also maybe some green tea capsules everything else is just a waste of money.

The only "magic pill" has two magic ingredients; Diet and exercise

Have a search for posts under TTs name for fat burners, he has some good explanations about them. They are not actually 'fat' burners. Info I have read shows that they only make a difference of 0.5lb per week if at all and as Medusa says, they may be more effective with a cleaner diet and exercise.

The training routine may suit your g/fs friend but it clearly does not suit her. She needs to change and yes I agree weights are good but there again we're biased on here.

You have still not given us personal details about her so how do we know she is overweight? She may simply need some muscle definition to look slimmer.

    Hi kitty,

Thanks for the link - i'lll have a read now.

In terms of stats like wieght, I haven't got any specifics. I wouldn't say she was obese, she wants to lose some body fat on the typical areas that woman find problematic - stomach, tricep area, top of the back leg....not a huge amount mind but her aim is to tighten up her physique. Not sure what else would be helpful here - let me know if u need anything else.

Kelroy from the looks of those links they're glorified thermogenics.

The calorie expenditure they claim to be so great is not massive. Only hand when accompanied by a good diet & cardio regime

There's still no guarantee that she will lose the weight from these areas which is another reason why diet and exercise are more important.
