New here...some advice needed

Didnt know there would be such a forum for muscle/body building :)
I'm new here and hope to improve my physique.
I actually require some advice on how I can build some muscle.
I'm not fat, or too thin, im pretty much in between.
I have some stamina/physical energy but not as much as one should.
I've not done much excersizes since I had a severe accident about 5-6 years ago now.
I want to build some muscle. I do some excersizes such as sit ups/press ups/riding an excersize bike but I always love to take long walks and "fast" walks.
I would like to build my chest and upper body. What is the best way of doing this? What things do I need? What about diet?
I dont eat junk food, I dont eat crisps - maybe a packet every 4 months.
What can one do to build up the strength and physique? Would be nice if it can be done using household items, if at all.
Any advice for a total newbie appreciated :)
