you've made the biggest step by deciding to train, so good work on that front.
as above, there's no such thing as 'too old', sure you'll maybe have creaks where a younger lifter won't, but you just need to adjust your training to your own needs.
Forget supplementing at the moment and focus on your diet & training and enjoy the newbie gains for the first 12 months. There are some really useful articles on this website aswell as the separate forums (the nutrition, training and over 40's forums will be the biggest benefit to you) to get your read on over the christmas break.
Also, toke made a very good suggestion with starting a journal - it's a good motivational tool and you can get some excellent feedback from the more experienced lifters that prowl the forum.
