Nige i need your advice please mate

Hi mate, seeing as youre the Vitamin D guru around these parts i have a query you may be able to answer

Im currently speaking a girl who is Anaemic and shes taking iron tablets, these dont seem to be helping at all

Upon reading the function of Vit D im sure i came across it saying its responsible for the uptake of Iron and Calcium into the body

Now my query is if shes getting next to no UV exposure and doesn't use sunbeds can a Vit D deficiency lead to other conditions like anaemia if left uncorrected?

Hi. I'm not aware of Vit D being connected with iron absorption or utilisation. Calcium, yes.

Symptoms of hypovitaminosis D (tiredness & lack of "get up and go") are similar to anaemia, so she should be tested for serum 25(OH)D. If she's <75nmol/L, supplementation/UVB exposure would be a good idea.

What form of iron is she taking? Some forms are 99% excreted, causing constipation and making poo black. Non-haem iron should be taken with Vitamin C to increase absorption. Does she eat red meat, liver or black pudding? Haem iron is much better absorbed.

No idea Nige, i forwarded her to the mealplansite's bit about iron and heam and non-heam

She does have a lack of get up and go as well, i have told her to get those 5000IU caps of Vit D3 from your links as well, no idea whether she has done so yet, will check and report back on that

Dont know what form of iron shes taking, will also find that out

She is borderline obsessive about dieting and calories and i am trying to talk her round to doing things properly and to not get caught up in it all. She was involved in a PSMF style plan not too long ago where she lost loads of weight very quickly and although she is eating better, its far from what i class as normal. She misses meals sometimes and im trying to get her to eat properly

edit: it was the Cambridge diet!

Oh, dear God! That's not a proper PSMF as there's not enough protein or EFAs. Remember http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/fb.asp?m=1838400 and http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/fb.asp?m=2471220 ?
