No Fly Zone

Haven't been checking the forum in a while, so apologies if this has been discussed/locked already. If a no fly zone is being implemented in Libya, does that mean we are almost inevitably going to get involved in the war in terms of troops on the ground as well? Anyone have any thoughts on how this is all going to pan out?

Seems likely we'll be one of the first countries to send planes in. Interesting to see the French supporting this.

I really hope they've though about what they're going to do when/if the get rid of Gadaffi. That's where they've really fcuked up with Iraq and Afghanistan.

No planning for the aftermath. They've just assumed that it'll all be ok. In fact the reality is that it could actually be worse. By invading Islamic countries they put wind into the sails of the Islamic fanatics who'll exploit it to look like the the great western infidel is attacking Islam again. Because of Libya we've taken our eye off Egypt but there is still a very good chance that the muslim brotherhood could get into power there. As bad as Mubarek was, I'd far rather have him in power than some idealistic religious fanatics. Same goes for Gadaffi. An utter nutjob yes, but at least he's driven by greed and ego, rather than religious fanaticism.

    Wars create money and opportunity.
The last thing on any of these rat politicians minds is the safety of civilians thousands of miles away.

Again it can only come down to the oil. North Korea and Zimbabwe have been systematically killing civilians for years yet the west has stood idly by and allowed it to happen. They have no oil.

Our reliance on oil controls everything we do. Our society would come to a halt if it weren't for the stuff so I can understand why we need to go to war because of it. What I loathe is the idea that politicians think they can tell us that they're putting our soldiers in harms way because they care so much about the civilians. It's so disrespectful and dishonest. They really do think we're idiots.

the UN agreements clearly states in the most obvious way possible that no troops will be sent in in anyway.

Arib Leadership where asking for help.

People there were out celbrating in the streets when it said the UN passed it.

Libya produce less than 2% of the worlds oil output.

Its not a war..nothing of the kind..our planes will literally circle over certain areas to keep their own airforce on the ground.

    North Korea and Zimbabwe .

Zimbabwe - Should have done something and still should.
North Korea - Wont do anything as they can actually fight back with force and are probably not afraid to use it , Tried once before in the korean war.

The same Arabs who have some of the best equipped armies and airforces in the world?

Let them police their own no fly zones if they want, why the hell we have to get involved is beyond me.

Given that this venture now has the complete backing of the UN, all those who where against the Iraq war on the grounds it was illegal will be perfectly happy to support it I imagine.

The no fly zone is just a gesture, too late to have any impact.  In any case Libya doesn't have much of an airforce, most of it unservicable.  Gadaffi now has the momentum and is the strong horse in this race.  He'salready won in other words.

They have far, far more than is needed to deal with the Lbyian airforce and are next door.  The Saudi's and Egyptian's, however, are not about to get involved in the topling of an unelected dictatorship now are they?

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have very large airforces, more than enough to patrol Libya several times over. Much easier to get the West to do it, then they can maintain an internal image of Arab for Arab..utter bull****.

The west is damned if they do, damned if they dont. Let them sort out their own problems for once.

Well I knew politcally it would look daft on them to order a no fly zone then police it themselves, just didnt think any of the neighbouring states would have enough planes to patrol such a large airspace, seeing as its taking France and the US as well as ours to patrol it.
