Northumberland's Strongest Man 2009

Just a heads up to those wishing to come along and watch NSM. It is part of the Powburn Show on Saturday 1st August (this sat). The show starts at 10am, but the strongman is due to kick off at 12pm. Here is the link.

http://www.powburnshow.co.uk/

Not sure on the athlete list. All events on grass (Hope it doesn't rain!!)

Events:

1) Wooden Log from floor for reps: 110kg
2) Car/van deadlift.
3) 300kg yoke for 25m then 10 x 100kg barrels to load.
4) 300kg tyre flip 10 reps.
5) 56lb weight for height.
6) Stones 100kg to 150kg.

Good luck to all the guys I know (and those I don't) who are competing. It is an Open show: my 1st, and only my 2nd big show, so I get to have my arsed kicked by Mark Lawson! Hopefully it won't be too embarassing!

Should be a good one to watch, and hopefully the weather will hold out. It was good last year (ask Tony), and they sometime get the spectators involved in the interval. I won £20 last year when they got the crowd to try and flip the tyre.

I will try to update when I get back.

    Best of luck with this.

    3) 300kg yoke for 25m then 10 x 100kg barrels to load.

    That's an odd one.

    It is an Open show

    I'd say heavy novice/intermediate

The yoke and barrels was going to be yoke for 15m then 3 barrel load then 10 tyre flips, but got changed. 10 barrles after the yoke is gonna be tough.

I would say it was Open otherwise Mark wouldn't be able to do it. I think Lee Allan is doing it too, and he has been to the UK's too. Neither are novice or intermediate. But each to their own.

    Agreed, both are open competitors.

    Perhaps that's why ....

If the promoter allows anyone to enter, then technically it's an 'open'.
On basis of the current 'open' standard 110kg log/300kg yoke/300kg tyre would not cut it.

It's great that we have these stepping stones to open level to allow guys to prepare for the next step up, but lets keep it real. I'd go further and say leave these comps. for the guys coming through the ranks( like yourself) and let you guys fight it out for victory.

Actually, even though he is gonna hand me my arse on a plate, I am looking forward to testing myself against someone like Mark! He is a great guy, an awesome athlete and is on the rise again this year.

The yoke would be light if it was by itself, but with a metric ton of barrels to load in the medley with it, I think it will be brutal for most folk. I agree some of the weights may not be as high as some comps, but its enough, hehehe! 6 events on grass and probably wet grass at that! The tyre maybe heavier now it is an event by itself, I will let you know if my body is working at all by tomorrow night or even the sunday!

Will......Thank you mate; Ive been training hard, but I am a bit tired. Hopefully I can pull something out of the bag!

    James....Thanks for that mate.

1st off, a huge thank you to Billy Little, his family and crew for organising and running a great show, not just for the athletes but also for the large crowd we had. It had some intersting events and was very crowd friendly. The crowd were well catered for, which was great for the younger and older spectators as it was a very family orientated crowd, which was great. If the weather had been a little kinder in the morning I am sure even more people would have been there.

The dangers of 3rd or 4th hand info......chinese whispers! The yoke and barrel medley only had 3 barrels! No idea where the confusion came from. Thank god it was just the 3! The events were log, deadift, weight for height, yoke, tyre, stones.

The weather was a bit crap before the show, but cleared up nicely for the start and got better and better. Grass......wow, that makes a difference, epecially wet grass. It was a bit nervy doing the yoke and barrels, but it only really effected the tyre as you couldn't drive with your legs without football boots, which I didn't have.

Mark Lawson beat me into 2nd place by half a point. It was a close contest all the way through; both of us won 3 events, and both of us got 3 2nds. However I got 1 joint 2nd and so lost out. I was very happy with my overall performance and couldn't have done anything better. A big well done and thank you to Mark. Gary came 3rd; I can't remember his 2nd name (sorry!), but a nice lad from Scotland.
I was happy to win the tyre, stones and especially the weight for height as I had never touched it before. Won it with 13 ft and show boated a bit with 15 ft to see what I could do.

Well done to all the competitiors, all of them did very well, made the contest exciting and enjoyed the day. Hopefully some of them will add a write up from their perspective so we can get a full picture. I am looking forward to next year already!

    Hi mate,

It will be Billy Little who will have the full results, points, times and reps. I will see if I can get a contact point for you.
