Oats touted as lowering cholesterol

Ok I understand how oats can help lower cholesterol but surely the pathway on which they work to do this is applicable to all fibre sources. What I mean is why bang on about oats when other fibre sources are effective too. Or are oats high in one particular type of fibre.

I am just wondering why there is always so much hype around oats

You point makes sense. The research that say oat as great was probably funded by a ceral company!

All good soluble fibre sources will be good for cholesterol. Oats are touted for it because the manufacturers have cottoned onto this and there is sufficient fibre in them to have claims passed by the JHCI. Wholegrain as a generalisation also has this, hence the Nestle wholegrain claims.

Yes and no. All soluble fibres are good for lowering cholesterol (inc pulses and fruit) but there was a study which showed one of the most effective fibres in intestinal binding of cholesterol was beta-glucan which is the type of fibre oats are rich in

That rings an annoyingly loud bell!! It's similar in structure to the fibre in psylium husk fibres I believe? Must be where I heard it before. Taste/texture is similar to the "goopy" bit of oats.
