Ok how do i go about making my own forum?

Ok i see alot of members have their own forums online, Iv got a fair idea how to go about making a web site but im not 100% sure about forums.

My first question is domain names, Are you renting these or can you buy them? Iv looked at 1and1 but as far as i can see your only renting the domain name from them, But iv herd of people owning and selling domain names.

Also which software should i use, Whats the best free software for making forums?

I know all this has been discussed before on mt Iv tried searching but i cant seem to find the threads im looking for, One of them was a thread asking about Muscletalks value ect.

Anyway general advice about creating and running a busy forum is walcome

cheers.

I host a few websites @ http://www.3ix.org/ who will provide you with hosting as well as a domain name from approx £20 per annum. Message boards are scripts installed on the webserver. Scripting languages vary but the most popular ones are php and asp.

If you purchase webspace specifically for a message board and use php then make sure you have at least 1 mysql database.

Vbulletin, PHPbb and Invision Board are pretty much the best forums on the market. A lot better than the crappy one Muscletalk is on

I've used a lot of different types over the past five or six years on a number of sites. Without doubt, vBulletin is the best and most versatile. However, this does come at a price.

Gone are the days when you could run the expensive forums without licenses and get away with it - they now have piracy investigators who will and do find you if you don't stump up the cash.

I ended up coding my own forum simply because it allowed me to integrate it with the rest of my site exactly how I wanted it do. Of course, this isn't possible for everyone. Whilst the forum is pretty good and has most of the features you would expect, it won't ever be as good as ones like Vb.

In summary, select the forum dependent on your means and goals

If your ok with using style sheets, but want the "security" of a hosting company I can recommend www.pd9hosting.com

You can buy domain names, but they won't guarentee your site hits search engines mate - that's another job

I run my forum on PD9 software [ www.ClubHavana.co.uk ] - and can recommend their software and support

Either that or just get some space and do it yourself, or even use a free service that won't cost you nowt. All depends on how much you want to spend/time and money wise on it.

Shout if you need any help
