Older people talking down?

Anyone else get pissed off with older people talking down to you, and assuming you're an idiot?

I've had a couple people today talk to me like I'm half retarded because I'm in my 20's - like they're so world weary, know everything, seen everything etc....without any of them, really, having many accomplishments.

If they'd *actually* been everywhere and done everything (or just more than me), then fine, I would be the idiot and they would have that right - but most of the time they'll talk to you like a little child without actually having done anything...just you know, lived for a few yrs more.

Is this how some people get off? Anyone else have experiences of this?

What, like wrinkly old or just arseholes, some people are just dicks and like talking down to anyone, i personaly give those guys a wide birth, you tend to spot them coming, generaly if whoever is patronising you isnt related , tell them to f"*k off and mind there own business, works for me.!!

I`m sat here wondering if I`m one of these`old people` now lol.

No offence Thai but I do remember feeling a bit like you, as I got older I started to think more in terms of listening to them and being polite and then making my own judgement rather than just dismissing them, I came to the conclusion that alot of what they said made sense when there was no hidden agenda, but then again the older generation to me probably had a different outlook to the ones people consider an older generation today.

Sorry if that sounds like an older person talking down to you, it isn`t meant like that .

Depends what they are speaking about. If some skinny old guy tells me how to train and has never lifted or been in a gym in his life i'll ignore him. If it sounds like its good advice or he's has some experince in the area that he's talking about i'll listen in...

Yeah, pretty much sums in up.

I ended up getting drunk with an old bloke called 'Cheddar' the other night. I beat him in a darts competition and he took it upon himself to drink whiskey with me afterwards. He told me that he used ot work in a cheese factory (hence the name) 5 times in the space of about 2 hours and ramble absolute bullsh1t for the entire time. Nice enough guy though!

Old people rock, I had a poor old soul piss himself today at work because I think he got a bit excited about his horse winning and I just tell the high and mighty ones that at least I'm still able to do naughty things with sexy girls and I probably wasn't even born the last time they managed to get it up

    Yes!
Some skinny guy in his 30s came up to me when I was drinking my PWO shake and said "oooh what magical formula you got their". It was just Whey and Dextrose, so I explained to him what each was for and why it was important.

    I never get this TBH

If anything, I find older people are intimidated by me (for no good reason I should add!)

I am in my late 20s. I don't work in an office environment though so this may be where we differ?

yes i have encountered this quite a bit too.

depends what you want from the conversation as to how you handle it ime.

i've walked out of a couple of metings after been spoken down to because of my age, in both situations deals revolved around my involvment so i had the upper hand. if it was the other way round i would have kept my mouth shut.

Nope. He was taking the piss, that's what made him a d1ck. He was mocking me because he thought I was an ignorant youth.

he wasn't that old, probably late 30's / 40's - just seemed a bit silly because he blatantly thought i had no idea what i was doing, and it wasn't like he had vast experience in the area we were discussing. in fact, he probably had less experience than i did....but you know us young people, always diving in where we don't know our arse from our elbow.

i like most older, older people, i just thought it was a bit cheeky - if he's done something to prove his superior experience, or had some massive track record, great, I'll bow to his superior judgement. the fact was he was just cocky, and had an opinion of himself far above his achievements...and was blatantly talking bollocks!

Just say "what are you now..? (then add 10 years on to what you estimate/know their age to be)" If they are only being a little condescending.

Get a lot of this in my work - warehouse/cash and carry.

Maybe try and take the piss out of you a bit to impress fellow witless gimps, that barely have a brain between them yet condescend to you.

in that situation then, always call him out, as long as you dont leave yourself in the sh1t, if he's talking down to you ask him to go into more depth then put your own thoughts across.
