Olympic Lifting Journal

Did my first week of olympic lifts this week, heres the weight used:

(For reference I weigh around 70kg)

Power clean from the floor - 60kg
Power snatch from the hang - 45kg
Push Press - 50kg

Any comments on the ratios of weights used? Any outstanding imbalances? Am I as weak as a little girl? [:p]

Let me know!

Military press was previously 5x5 with 50kg!

I posted about the problems I seemed to be having with momentum on the push press, and didn't really push it. Hoping to do better on that this week.

-60kg wasn't an absolute max on the clean, and I think I could have pulled more.
-Power snatch also wasn't incredibly hard, and I'm hoping to put up more.
-Push Press I had technique issues in, as long as I can get it nailed I expect to be able to put up a lot more than I can actually strict military press!

I was surprised how comfortable the hang snatch actually felt. Looking forward to pulling it off the ground in a few weeks.

I'll aim to get the push press a bit closer together this week. Cheers Johnny!

Was once told that your best clean should be about half your best squat. Something I've always tried to work on and also relates to many of the other people I train with who report the same ratios.

For the Snatch you may want to consider going from the floor earlier than you think. If it feels comfortable now in the hang position you may as well get used to going from the floor. As a preference I rarely do hang snatch, and when I do it is as a warm up prior to doing snatch from the floor.

Thanks for the tips guys, ah the squat, theres a story in there....

I used to be able to squat 180kg for 4 good reps, slightly breaking parallel, however I blew my ACL out playing basketball and I'm just getting back into the swing of things at the moment.

As a result the past few weeks I've been doing 5x5 with just 80kg, and I'm not sure how quickly my squat will be able to progress again.

Ant, if you don't mind i think it would be very interesting if you could update us each week on this post to let us know how you are progressing, what problems you have had etc, it would be good for others to learn from.
Would that be possible? Please don't feel pressured into doing it now i asked! No probs if you don't feel like it.
    Cheers

Stick it up fella's, should be some good motivation! I was pondering whether to put up the numbers weekly anyway, so this seals the deal.

Now lets make sure I nail this push press!

OK I should be doing push press again tonight (I'm a bit ill but its not going to stop me!), heres the combined tips I've got so far, does anyone have anything else to add?

    1. Wear shorts! (I wore pants last time and I think it may have interfered with the dip a little)
    2. Try to feel the momentum snake up my body into the press
    3. In the starting position keep the bar up against my throat as opposed to the clavicles

    Okay push press last night:

Ended up with a couple of triples at 60kg, second set of triples being better than the first, though I'm still not incredibly happy with my explosion (as a side note my bench hasn't been great since coming back from injury, I think I need more dynamic work on the triceps).

However thats a 10kg jump, so I'm happy overall!

I should also note that I have to clean the weight to my shoulders as there isn't a rack handy at a decent height in my gym.

Ah yes i have heard of him, he came 6th in his class in the World championships.
Imagine that, he can push press that weight and there are 5 men currently stronger at the same bw!!!
    Shocking stuff.
    Makes me feel very weak...

    Thanks Johnny [V][:p]

Anyway heres an update from Saturday:

Friday I played basketball for a couple of hours, which left my shoulders a little sore for Saturday morning, this messed up my explosion quite a bit I feel.

After trying some hang snatches and not seeming to get the explosion I was after I decided to give some power snatches from the floor a go instead. Great exercise! I got a bit carried away and ended up doing quite a lot of sets.

Hit 55kg for two, and just missed 57.5kg.

After the power snatch marathon my clean suffered a lot, however I ended up getting 65kg.

All in all I had mixed feelings about that session, looking forward to going into the next one a bit fresher.

    Push Press Update:

Got a decent rep with 62.5kg yesterday, overall wasn't pleased with my performance again, I think the easter weekend has took a toll! It's becoming apparent that having to clean the weight, then push press it is draining my energy somewhat, and doesn't set me up optimally for the press.

my push press is soo bad, as i realised yesterday. i can overhead press 3x70x5 and struggle only on the last set, so i should really be looking to get a set of 5 on 100.

    can i bollox :(

I just do it stood in the middle of the gym! Clean to my shoulders then start push pressing. I don't know whether my gym has an exceptionally low "ceiling" on the squat rack or not, but I'm only 5'9 and couldn't do a set of push presses in it.

Now thats a good idea! Wonder if there is enough room in front of the squat rack in my gym for that? I'll definitely give it a crack next week.

    Nice one Si!

    Snatch and Clean update:

Did Snatches and cleans again on Saturday morning.

Started off with Snatches, jumping up in 10kg increments from the bar to 50kg, then went for 55kg. Everything was going well so I went for 57.5kg and got it this time, 1 nice clean rep!

At this point I thought I'd try not to push the snatch farther, and leave some energy for cleaning this week.

Cleaning went up in 10kg increments until I got to 60kg, then I went

    65kg x 1
    70kg x 1 (I can clean my own weight!)
75kg x 1 (I can clean more than my own weight!)

All in all a damn good session, didn't miss a lift, and got two PB's. Well chuffed

Nice one Ant, glad to see it is all going to plan

Are you power snatching that or have you committed to the full move yet?
