Olympic dumbell/barbell set suggestions for Furyan! Please help

Hi!

I need to find an Olympic weights set and would appriciate some recommendations, he has piled too much on to his trusted weights set for some time and it has finally had enough and bent.

So the crunch, his impending birthday means it has fallen on me to find a suitable olympic weights set, and would realy like some suggestions!

Any help appriciated,

Staceyjay

The dumbells are where it gets silly in price.
You can get about 200kg of weights and a barbell for around £300 and maybe get a pair of adjustable dumbell handles?

If you're after made up dumbells, the costs run into the thousands.

Bodypower in Northampton has some ebay deals on at the mo.

    Store here: http://stores.shop.ebay...Q_armrsZ1QQ_fsubZ9795462

    Fair deal here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/B...14&_trkparms=65%3A12

Plus it has free delivery at the mo, too.

Personally, I'd buy a barrowload of secondhand stuff from ebay but then the postage cost might nullify most of the advantage. :(

Do you have the plates already?  Assuming so do they have a 5 cm / 2 inch hole in the middle?

If you want a good quality barbell be aware that they are expensive, even second hand or refurbished.  I've managed to bend one of my '700 lb / 320 kg' rated bars and I expect he's stronger than I am.

Do you know if he does any Olympic lifting (overhead)?

I don't think Furyan does olympic lifting or powerlifting, so a good quality bar would be all he needs.

If you want a top of line bar, i.e. a Texas Power Bar, they run at around £400- but i'm not certain he would no the difference!

If you want the best, and think he would appreciate it and/or he is into powerlifting..

    Watson do some good stuff:

As for plates, what does he already have?

I only know Furyan from his posts on here obviously so he might not be anything like me but if I was buying weights / bars etc I would absolutely want to get the exact ones I wanted and I'd be gutted if someone spent money on them as gifts and got the 'wrong' ones. I wouldn't let them know this obviously I should add.

I dont mean that to sound rude but I just know how I am about my passions in life.

No biggie like, there are a lot worse things for you than using steroids, I mean I probably shouldn't have been smoking crack or getting into bar fights at your age TBH  - drab4

Yeah thats why im on here, hes gonna see this, its not gonna be a suprise, id rather find the right thing, and have him ok it,. Hes not a power lifter, or olympic, he was using normal weights (1 inch) and the bars have bent so he wants olympics, but would need plates too as his are normal. Will check out ebay, thanks, what an expensive 'passion'!

    They look spot on.
Important thing to remember is that the P&P is free on these, too under the offer.
Just had a look at Parcelforce (can't deliver, too big/heavy) and DHL for you. DHL wanted £98 plus VAT.

Looks good. I think Furyan may deadlift quite heavy. A 320kg rated bar may become bent if he's regularly putting up heavy weights.

If not, go ahead! Quite a good deal.

I had six of Bodypower's standard commercial bars in my gym and they were all fine mate - some big lifts and drops going on.
Also had a power bar thing which cost a fortune. Apart from having knurling that ripped your hands to shreds, we never saw any performance difference - guess it only matters up near the limit.

Thanks for the help on this one guys. I would have researched it myself, but my spare time nowadays is at a bare minimum! Its true that my dumbells warped, they were a beginners set anyway, id had them from the outset when i started weightlifting all those years ago, at that all time skinny 9 stone! Ah i still remember benchpressing 10KG lol!

Id had 25kg on each side of each dumbell and i was dumbell pressing, when i put them down, the spinlocks wouldnt move! They had been bent into place! I was devastated! Theres nothing that can replace your first weight set....... other than a brand spanking new Oly lifting set!

" Do not tell me to play the hand i've been dealt. To hell with the cards and damn the dealer! Any man can achieve anything if he works hard enough, and thats the truth of it. Go at it with all that you are, and it is within your reach"
