One law for them, another for us.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-12742868

A policeman gets shot and suddenly people are getting 40 years for assistance yet never pulled a trigger.

Why do murderers not get 40 years when its normal people??

let alone those who assist them.

The 40 years has nothing to do with anything other than a policeman was shot in the whole tragic event.

There are clear policy reasons for this. Police put themselves in real danger every day and are effectively the last line of defence between civilised society and anarchy. So it would make sense to make an example out of those who kill police, because you are not only killing somebody, you are making an attack on civilised society as well.

But I agree with what you are saying, because the extent of the discrepancy in this particular instance is exaggerated. It says more about the leniency towards the majority of murderers, which is a bit of a disgrace really.

Police are paid to take the risk, there should be no distinction.

40 years?  I can't ever remember seeing a sentence that long before in the UK.

I don't know the specifics in this case, but it looks like there were charged on a number of different offences.
Any type of assault on the police generally gets a heavy sentence and a high profile story like that is just begging for people to made an example of.
