Outdoor toys from when you were a kid

These days kids are all skateboarding, scooters and BMX which are all great.  Indeed, skateboards and BMX were around when I was a kid.  But skateboards were narrower back then.

Back then things were built to last. It wasn't a 'made of plastic - throwaway society' like it is with toys these days. My Tonka metal toys would've been smashed to hell if they'd been made of plastic. As it happens, they still look great to this day now that my 2yr old has them to play with.

rather than actual toys (i had bikes, skates etc) i had just as much fun playing with 'stuff' trees, rivers, bits of old wood, hammers and nails, fishing rods, catapults, tents.  Spent most of my time building stuff or exploring.  at one point i had a 2 room treehouse over the river, along with a shelter, jettie and floating pontoon i built with stuff found or borrowed from the local farm

i was never bored as a kid!

If be out buying a chopper now if it came with one of those!

Skinny skateboards seem to be coming back, they're about £80 though and a sure route to a wheelchair after 20+ years I reckon

I've spent the last 12 months putting this together. It's a 1987 Mongoose Decade. A bike I always as a kid. I take it out on organised ride outs (pub crawls) with other blokes with old kids bikes. The December ride out in London had 141 dressed Santas plus other non dressed riders pub crawling through Central London. It was an awesome day.

Was well into marbles as a kid, had hundreds of them.

Them weird skipping things that you span around with one leg and hopped over with the other, was a complete spaz at that.

And these

Never had all the in things as a kid but was never bored. Hunting, shooting, fishing and scrumping kept me busy.

A tarza (diy rope swing) was the best thing ever. We had some on massive trees. Dens too. Homemade peg guns and imagination.

BMX, half-pipe, 45 degree ramp, box of plasters, the odd trip to A&E to get gravel removed from hands, face and knee caps.

Cricket bat, stumps and a tennis ball.

Job done for 99% of the year's outdoor activities. :)
