Owning your own island

It's obviously something none of us are likely ever to do but having seen a story today about mark zuckerberg buying an island, it's got me thinking.

Say I was to buy my own tropical island tomorrow from some tinpot dictatorship down old south America way and moved there, would the island be a sovereign state or would you still technically fall under the durastiction of the former owner of the island?

What would happen in the event of someone invading? Would You and your family be the single line of defence? Would you need to negotiate treaties with other nations to help stave off the threat of invasion?

Would you be able to apply to bodies such as the UN to become a recognised state?

In short no to the UN they have large expensive criteria that need to be met. I believe that depending on who owns the island in the first place you could set it up as your own sovereignty. Would love my own island you can buy them for not too much money if you look in exotic places only downside is living there full time would be potentially very tough if you had a cyclone or something.

Yea, I imagine they're 'cheap' for a reason - I.e. You'll need to rebuild the island every year

Even if the weather isn't a problem,I can't help think there are some serious practical issues to living in your own island. Like electricity, plumbing, construction/maintenance, communications of any kind. Not to mention groceries, unless you wanna go all survival and live the rest of your life like that.

The sort of people who buy islands usually have yachts and airplanes too. To live in an island with any of modern life's comforts you'll need lots of money to hire and house people and to have transportation in and out of there. Otherwise you're just stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Richard Branson bought Necker island in 1978 for $180,000. (He was 28 at the time).

The island was Barron and uninhabitable and cost him $10million and took 3 years to build the facilities and make it inhabitable.

It now has accommodation for 28 people and rents out at $62,000 a day!

Spam?! Seriously... I didn't think there was an issue with having a signature!!! I'll change it now seeing as people are getting so funny about it... There was NOT any intentional spamming... It's my signature across all forums :-/

There isn't but its not *technically* a signature, it's being copy & pasted into every post.

It's also advertising something that hasn't been paid for to the site's owners, which isn't allowed, ergo it's spam.

I haven't copied and pasted anything- I seriously don't have time for that. I have switched off the signature which I have on other forums, here:

I clearly wasn't aware of this!! And as I said I've now switched it off. It would have been better to hear "could you please not add that to every post", I didn't know it wasn't "allowed". I've actually gone through and removed it from all my posts (I think).

I think the rest of my text disappeared; but I basically said I wasn't aware it wasn't "allowed" and I've removed it and think I've managed to remove it from all of my posts too.
