Pain in chest when doing dips

When I do dips I have this pain in my sternum, right between my pecs, as though my chest is going to break!! I've had this for a few months now, occasionally when I stretch my arms back, my chest gives off a loud cracking noise, other people have noticed it's that loud! I've been for an x-ray to make sure nothing is broken and the results came back all clear. I've tried laying off all chest exercises for about 3 weeks but as soon as I started again it came back. I don't know what this could be... Any one else had similar, anything I can do to sort it out?

Thanks

On it's own the cracking wouldn't be anything to worry about - just air pockets popping, I believe. The pain between your pecs is likely to be the insertion point of the muscle, the tendons.

You may have strained it either with a big single exertion or just general overuse. 30 minutes with a physio might be worthwhile for professional diagnosis and rehab plan. You may need to drop the weight down considerably to build the tendon back up to strength - kind of the same way a complete beginner needs to work on tendon strength before launching into the big weights.

    Thanks for the reply.

Do you suggest dropping the weight on bench as well or just dips? It doesn't really seem to be affected doing bench, there can be a slight twinge at times but nothing like when doing dips.

i used to have this, it felt like a very un natural pain right in the centre of my chest and i only ever felt it doing dips, even though it was only bodyweight dips at the time too, i rarely did dips because of the pain, i had a long break from training and since coming back to training its no longer there, so not a very helpful answer but just thought i'd mention i've had the same thing and it just passed itself.

I get it on weighted dips, but it's not so bad so I just batter on regardless

If my assessment were correct then you'd need to go easy on the muscle for as long as it takes to recover, which would include benching. I have to stress, though, I'm no expert. I'd encourage you to find a physio who is and give him some dosh for 30 minutes of his time for a proper diagnosis.
