Question About Reps???

Ive been reading some of the journals posted by some posetrs on here and noticed something.

For example, say they were doing flat bench press. They have stated that eg they did:

50kg x 8 reps
50kg x 8 reps
50kg x 8 reps
50kg x 8 reps
60kg x 3 reps


Is the above benefical? I always thought that 4 was enough.

Or are they adding in the 60kg x 3reps in order to up the weight each week? Will this help increase the weight each week?

Sorry if fits a stupid question. Im just a little bit confused?
