Recommended parcel delivery companies?

I need to send fragile parcels on quite a regular basis. At the moment I use Royal mail but often despite been packaged correctly and clearly labelled the parcels get damaged and sometimes even go missing needless to say this causes problems. Also it's not sometimes the post office it's self will not accept the parcels or put up an argument about the goods in transit been on the restricted or prohibited list(non-of my items are and I have an e-mail from the dangerous goods team from the RM to prove it.....but the post office are still sometimes awkward).
So can anybody recommend any better parcel delivery firms?

I would avoid "collect my parcel" - they f**ked up big time, - I will never return to them
I use Hermes now (there's loads of complaints about them but I have never had a problem).
I think it's just the company you choose, but also the service.  Some of the options do not guarantee that the parcel will be collected on a certain date.. I think it's worth paying a few quid more to get a guarantee collection, signiture, insurance etc
Take lots of detailed photos of the parcel, the packaging etc etc.. - all this stuff will prove very useful if there's a problem and you have to claim on insurance.  I have had to claim once, and because of the photos i had, they paid out very quickly with no quibble

Are you looking at setting up a contract with a courier?
Going from my experience when I was a despatch manager the only company that never let me down was Fed-Ex, not cheap but excellent service and accountability.
These days I would also recommend DPD (Dynamic Parcel Distribution) They have an excellent track record.
You get what you pay for, some companies attempt to provide a service too cheaply and usually fail.
Avoid TNT , they lost 6 consignments in the first two weeks that I used them.
I found that although customers always wanted cheap prices;  they were always prepared to pay for a reliable delivery.

    Ignorance: Reassuringly Expensive.
