Recovery Drinks!?!

Hi
I've seen & heard about people having recovery drinks after a workout.  I guess this is some Isotonic drink of sorts!?!
My question is, Is it ok to have a recovery drink instead of a Protein shake or as well as?
I'm taking Protein shake with Creatine included after a workout but wondered if I could have a recovery drink as well?
What are the actual benefits of these recovery drinks?

Thanks for the response.  Is the one you're using a Protein shake also or is it a recovery drink?
I'll check out the MP Recovery XS

Generally a recovery drink is a mix of protein and carbs, usually carb heavier - a 2:1 ratio is pretty common although there is some variation.

Its a protein powder you mix with water, as echo below said, it has protein and carbs in it.

forget about a recovery shake, protein shake is fine

though you'd probably be better off adding some fast acting carbs in there. popular choices include maltodextrin, dextrose, waxy maize starch or vitargo

depends how hard you train and the rest of your diet really

if its mainly cardio no need for anything other than a good whey shake

hardcore weights and cardio - with drops and giants i would def hit a purpose made shake or make your own

    i tend to go with
    1:1 ratio

    e.g
45g of whey and 45 g of first carb

or 30 g of whey , 15g of lecuine, 45g of carb and some creatine

dont really like the 2:1 carb to protein ration

    Thanks for the responses guys

I was just a little confused as to the differences/benefits of having my protein shake after a work out or having a recovery drink instead or as well as.

I'm doing the P90X workout which includes weight training as well as lots of cardio.  It's more designed for getting cut & ripped rather than bulking up & having mass.

Perhaps I should introduce a few of the supplements that Kaldog mentioned instead of a recovery drink

creep, your goal is to loose fat?? stick with a protien shake after training to help muscle, have a banana before training (30 min b4)
if your training in the morning then recov drink will be ok but most the 1s ive used are high in carbs so if you training on an evening ud be better of with out the carbs (your goal). protien shake after training the get home shower and get a big piece of salmon in.

^Not sound advice if he's wanting to lose fat, not IMO anyway... I'd stick with just whey and maybe some BCAA's if you can afford them

    Current PB's
    100kg Clean & Jerk
    110kg Bench
    190kg Deadlift
    140kg Back Squat
    120kg Front Squat

    Thanks Shae

Can I ask, what are BCAA's?  Sorry if this sounds a silly question, this is all new to me.

If you don't mind me saying, you're physic is really damn good, this is what I'm hoping to achieve.  You look like you're carrying little BF.

What workout do you do?  I'm doing the P90X & I'm really enjoying it as well as the start of visible changes.

What workouts do you do on certain days?

It depends, I have carbs all the time - during training, after training and with every meal and I'm losing fat fine.
