the thing is, you see ricky gervaise and u think "david brent."

i don't think he will be able to shake that image.

i was watching the sex lives of potato men, and all i could think of when i saw mackenzie crook was "gareth keenan." it just doesn't seem right him playing any other character.

Yeah Gervais is totally type-cast plus David Brent is only an exageratted ricky gervais! Dont get me wrong the office was brilliant but how versatile is gervais? Be interesting to see how long his career lasts coz he's been riding a crest of a wave without producing anything since the office.

i know what mean, i think the one big problem is going to be ricky gervias acting ability, he is very good at doing the david brent character and people are always going to think of him as david brent, unless he really has the acting ability to create a whole new character, and from the trailer i saw i don't think he does. which is unfortunate.
having said that i like the style of comedy and how ricky gervais does things so at the end of the day it should still be new jokes and gags so should be funny.

yeah but the office was such a huge success that when he was getting extras commissioned he could make it such a massive project, so even though this really is the first thing to be produced by him the office it is so big with several hollywood a-listers that it would have just taken so much time.

Yeah westy its the versatility question. I've thought about this before RE: Ricky Gervais But maybee due to his massive sucsess he'll be able to do a couple of SHXT shows and still have that "The nation loves you" Bullet proof exterior and the critics will wave him through no matter what he does! Its Happened before! Anyways he's got loads of HollyWood "Chums" making cameos on this show so that'll boost it's credibillity!

If it don't work out, they'll give him a chair and he can be Johnathon Ross's side kick.

Someone said that on stand up. He is not as funny as he thinks he is. The Office is not a bad thing to be typecast to and he certainly has enough cash in the bank which will keep getting topped up as a result of royalties etc. I'll be watching and think we have to do so with an open mind!

I agree that Ricky Gervais really isn't that far off David Brent in real life! Also I agree his style is very similar in everything he does, I think there will always be a big overlap with Brent in anything he plays.

He tried serious acting in an episode of the U.S. show 'Alias' and by his own admision he just can't act straight!

I think he's based this character on my brother-in-law who gave up managing a retail superstore to study drama etc and has mainly had small roles and a few parts as extras

without producing anything since the office

hmm 2 live tours, a series of his chat show, several series of the xfm radio show, appearing in an ep of alias, writing and appearing in a simpsons ep.....and i thought he was the highlight of live 8

IMO hes the best british comedian of the moment. whilst Meet Ricky Gervais was more of an acquired taste, the live shows were brilliant and his shows on xfm are the only radio i can stick. i do give stephen merchant his credit tho as i believe he did more of the writing for the office

thanks for posting about this westy19 - i thought it was next thurs & have just cancelled a night out so i can watch it!

    (obvously im a fan)

Dylan Moran did black books around the same time, I find that far funnier than the office, his stand-up's better too. Just my point of view however. Shame it didn't get the same hype the office did.
