Severe Shin Splints !!! Help........?

Ever since I started a job working in an office I have been getting really bad shin splints?? I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not but only started getting them about 2-3 weeks after starting the job. Also my lower back is becoming very tight which i'm guessing is down to sitting down a lot now, that part I can figure out myself but why the shin splints????

I used to be a fitness instructor and on my feet all day taking classes moving about and now the new job role is very different.

I train 5-6 days a week so it's not like i'm not exercising either ????

SOOOOOO Frustrating!!..... I will give you an example of how bad it's getting. If I was to walk at even a steady pace for about 500 meters then BANG... my shins would be tight as hell and on fire????

Can anybody help??...

I get the same issue.  I'm a softwate developer, so spend a lot of time sitting.  I also get pain in the calves and hams after running and then sitting for a prolonged period.  Trick is to get up every 20 minutes or something.  If you have any reading or review material, walk around the office (or even outside) whilst reviewing it on a tablet (or print it if no tablet or wifi policy does not allow it).

You could also try sitting on a fitness ball instead of a chair.  I'm trying to get our office to introduce them.

Or, your could ask for a standing desk?  Again, trying to get my office to get some of these.

Have you been assessed by a physio / sports medic? There could be a number of reasons which you're getting 'shin splints' - also this term is no longer used because there a at least a couple of different types of problems which resemble 'shin splints'.

I do tend to get lost in time when on the computer and 2-3 hours could easily go by :-/ I will have to get up and walk around a lot more!! Thanks Stinking_dylan!

No I haven't went to see anyone about it as it's only started recently and thought i could maybe find a solution without having to go to a specialist... but will have to soon as it's only getting worse. Thanks guys!

I've been informed that shin splints can be down to your insoles on your shoes... maybe try this as a fix?

Theres some good insoles around there... have a good and buy on ebay, usually the cheapest place. I've had very similar problems in the past with my shoes. Hope it helps.

Sorbothane insoles used to be good for putting in ordinary shoes.

My guess would be the tibialis posterior tendon. Have a google of stretches and exercises for this and see if they help

I hate to state the obvious but have you looked into pronation?
It may be a simple as getting a pair of appropriate shoes.
