Shrugs with Barbell?

Would this be any good or is it better to stick with DBs?

As far as shrugs are concerned, barbell is the best, imo.

Let it sink.... I can swim.

    ditto from me.

as long as you go up and down in decent enough from you should be fine.

I prefer smith machine as dumbells I have used tend to stick to mey legs and make it akward.
Free weights tend to rub against my leg as well.
Smith machine allows me to lean back a little, so less rubbing.

We have not got a shrug machine at the gym. so not option. but used to like them years ago when I had the option.

It's always good to minimize rubbing whilst wearing gym shorts.
