Smith Machines

I have tried to stay away from the smith as much as possible as I wanted better form and stability but sometimes I have to wait a while for a barbell and bench. I tend to do my Close Grip Chest Press on these as it has no chance of tipping.

How much better is doing free weights (Barbell) over the smith machine?

    Don't know what sort of answer you are after as it's not something youi can quantify. But most of the time I would pick BB over the smith machine.

    Personally I think the smith machine is fine for incline bench, CG bench and seated shoulder press but I wouldn't dream of using it for some others, squats for example.

    i use it for cg bench, not ideal for me but better than getting stuck under the bar!

    We had this debate the other day.Some people feel strongly that they are sh1t.I use a smith because I train on my own and I've always made decent progress using it.I've done free weight benches in the past too and havent noticed a tremendous amount of difference between them (in terms of chest development anyway).

    Cool thats what I thought.

    I was told if you use the free weight then more muscles come into play to stabilise the weight.
    I find I can lift more on the smith machines but much prefer the BB.

    I tend to use the free motion squat machine for my squats. Is there any problem with this?

    I'm not familiar with this free motion squat machine to be honest mate.I have to agree with the other fellas though that its probably best not to use the smith for squats.Cant really beat free weights for squatting.Like chez says, the smith is useful for benching,cgbp and military press.In my humble opinion anyway!

    Why is it better to do squats with free weights? Your still working the same muscles in your leg at the end of the day arnt you?

    When you squat the natural range of movement of the exercise might not be directly up and down.It might be a few degrees off 90.With the smith its straight up and down and I found that when I tried smith machine squats I felt quite a strain on my lower back at the bottom part of the movement.I suppose this is because my body might not be as it naturally should be while squatting.Forgive my explanation,it's not exactly scientific but I'm sure you get the idea.With movements like bench press,I dont feel this is as much of a concern on the smith because they are directly up and down movements.I dont know enough about that machine in your pic to make a comment really,but I will say his feet are placed interestingly!With the feet that far in front of the body it will make it more of a hamstring exercise.If you want to hit the quads,squat so your knees are pretty much over your feet.

    Cheers cleg, i understand what you mean.

    The beauty with that machine is that you can place your feet where ever you want and the movement is not straight up and down. It feels very comfortable when doing it and allows you to do it with your hands by your sides so you can really feel the power in your leg.

    Im currently doing 220 on that. I started doin 80 but I havent noticed much growth in the quads. Well I have but it's more definition than leg size increase.

    I was involved in the convo on smith machines the other day, i think generally people would avoid them if they could.
    Personally i train alone and if i cant get a spotter i use them for some assurance when doing squats etc

    New smith machines are set slightly off 90 degrees which makes for a more natural movement. when you bench u don't go straight up and down unless you are using a very wide grip. when benching you bring the bar down to you nipple line and it's above the shoulder when extended (flat bench)
    in my gym the smith machine has been put in the wrong way round, but because it means that to use it properly you'd have to face away from the mirror 95%of the blokes in my gym get into it the wrong way round

    i tend to use the smith machine for excercises at the end of the workout when i am tiring. especially since there are very few people in my gym who can spot properly.

    Pressing movements are straight up and down surely?Why would different grips make a difference?

    you can go straight up and down but it's not a very natural movement for your shoulders. your elbows would have to flare out pependicular to your body placing stress on the shoulder girdle.
    it's not a huge move off the vertical plain but when you flat bench you don't bring the bar down to the top off your chest i.e in line with your shoulders you bring it down lower down. Stuart McRobert, author of Brawn, says you should bring it down to inline with your nipple. i see some excellelent benchers in my gym doing that but i have to admit it doesn't work for me.

    you really have to see someone else benching side on as when u are benching yourself it feels like you are going striaght up and down. it's not easy to describe by me anyway
