So confused

Im so confused lately, Ive been reading this forum and other internet sites, and it just seems that whatever one is telling me to do, the other is telling me to do the complete opposite..

I currently weigh 14st10pounds and I want to be around 13 stone or less. So, the 2 stone or so of weight I want to lose is ALL fat. I am currently doing weightlifting(dont really know the correct term) 3 times a week as Ive been told that an increase in muscle well help burn calories. Im also doing HIIT(well, its not quite HIIT yet, but im building up to it) 5 times a week as well. My diet is pretty bad - I have cocopops for breakfast, dont eat until I get home from 6th form and then Ill eat whatever doesnt have too many calories, and then Ill have dinner which is whatever my mum gives me between 6-9 PM. I dont think this is particularly working very well, and definately not at the rate I want it too.

I have almost an unlimited amount of time to do exercise, although I really dont want to sit on bike or cross trainer for an hour a day - things like HIIT are fine as I dont want to kill myself because of the boredom..Im also extremely dedicated and will pretty much do whatever it takes to lose this weight. My questions are:

What kind of regime shall I be following for optimum fat loss - as quickly as possible preferably.
How many calories should I be eating a day?
What sort of exercise and how much should I be doing per day?
Anyone know any good diet books?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, preferably from somebody whos done it/been through it before, as all the info I get from the internet is so conflicting..

Post your diet up in the Diet Forum and let the guys and gals there sort that side of it out.

Your other Q's are far too generalised with no definate answers from info given I'm afraid so all I can say is a sound basic weights routine, say 3 x pw for full body and at least 30mins cardio 3 x pw would be a start.

This is what Im saying, I dont really have a diet, if there are any good books on a good diet to follow that has some variation let me know...

What does pw mean? On weights days, monday is a leg/abs day, wednesday is a shoulder/back day, and friday is an arms/chest day. With HIIT im currently on 11 30 sec sprints in 25 minutes, roughly 2 mins 30 secs rest between each sprint...obviously bringing that down each day/week.

OK, what about what exercises and how much to do? Surely you can give me a ballpark figure on how many calories?

It's impossible to say as there are way too many variables..... I can lose weight on over 3000kcals a day, some could go higher still, some need to drop to nearer 2000. We really cannot say.

There are some sample diets in the 'Articles' link in the yellow bar at the top of the page.

If you want a start. You need to consume food no longer than every 3 hours ensuring each feed contains some quality protein. If cutting the carb componant will vary at your meals depending on energy requirements.

If you have a spare $30 download James' BBing Nutrition ebook, well worth it IMO.

pw means per week BTW (by the way )

I've got a few suggestions, but I'm not as well informed as others on this list.

First, I think that if you focus on eating "clean" then the calorie question will, to an extent, take care of itself. What you're doing at the moment is a bit counter-productive-you seem to be starving yourself through the day, which i think I'm right in saying slows your metabolism. It will also probably leave you with precious little energy for your workouts.

Eating clean means cutting out fats and sugars. stay away from full-fat dairy products, crisps, sweets, fatty red meats, fatty sauces. Try to eat wholegrain rather than processed carbs (brown bread instead of white, brown rice instead of white, easy on the pasta). Eat clean protein sources-chicken and turkey (breast only), lean cuts of beef, tuna.Eat your frutis and veg.

cutting out fat and refined carbs means that you will be eating lower calorie foods, (a gram of fat has 9 cals, a gram of clean protein 4), so to an extent the calorie issue kind of takes care of itself-but be careful about portion size.

So, for example, ditch the coco puffs (loads of sugar)in favour of porridge, have a couple of tuna sandwiches plus fruit during the day (NO MAYO ON THOSE SARNIES)and try to talk your mum into cooking something healthy in the evening. Or, revolutionary idea, cook something yourself! Learn to read nutrition labels.

In terms of workouts you really should check out the cardio and workout sections on this page, cos there's loads of really good advice from people who know loads more than me, but I do have a couple of observations.

Personally, if your planning to do cardio for weight loss (meaning probably 3-5 sessions per week), then I wouldn't start the week with legs. also, if you have to do arms on chest day, make sure that you do chest first, since these exercises incorporate the tricep-if your tricep is exhausted from an arm workout, your chest session will be useless. I think I'm right in saying that most people don't do the whole arm on chest day-some people combine chest with tricep, but if they take this approach they tend to do bicep on back day.

    Hope this helps.

    Firstly, thanks for the help

    Some questions:

I dont mind eating tuna sandwhiches everyday, but I can imagine it being quite bland after a while, what other sandwhiches are good? I dont mind cooking my own food, although, bare in mind Im not Jamie Oliver...again, do you know of any/where I can find out about any decent meals that are fairly easy to cook...also I dont want to be eating the same thing 7 days a week...the only reasons I eat cocopops is because its easy just to fall out of bed and pour some in a bowl and eat..I know there are other cereals which are better but I only like the taste of cocopops! I will try porridge though.

I dont tend to do much on the chest on the chest/arms day, only a machine bench press, and we always do that first. So I guess thats ok. And yeh, Ive discovered the pain of doing legs on monday and then HIIT for the rest of the week..

Yeh cocopops are the only cereal I can actually eat, I dont know if it is because its chocolate or not, but all other cereals I really cant stand/go off after a few days. I dont particularly fancy shelling out loads of money on protein powder, Im not a competitive bodybuilder or whatever, just doing it to raise my resting metabolic rate or whatever
