Spending money on holiday - what do you do?

My girlfriend was mocking my antiquated ways last year for taking traveller cheques and in Italy I had problems cashing them in a couple of places.

Shes took out nearly all her cash throught the ATM and reckoned she was charged at a reasonable rate but before leaving I checked with my bank and to cut a long story short didnt trust the advice i was given from the cashiers.

Ive now heard of a card that you can put credit onto that can be used charge free in ATMs will be getting infor on that tonight.

Any other good suggestions?

I went to Spain a few years ago with trvelers cheques abnd had a nightmare trying to cash them. I went on a day trip to a town and rather than see the sights I ended up spending virtually the whole day going from place to place trying to get them changed.

No one was interested. I just get cash out from the ATM as and when I need it now.

ATM is becoming easiest way however WHEN it swallows your card you are goosed.  The safest way is probably to still take some in reserve as travellers cheques or cash so you have something to fall back on.  I take a credit card and a debit card with me so if one card goes I've still got something to fall back on.

I wouldn't like to get stuck with zero money abroad, especially with a small child, although there are options like Western Union etc where family etc could get money to you quickly if you were really stuck I suppose.

I charge most purchases to my credit card and take some cash for the rest - some in the local currency and some in Pounds, which I change there if need be.  I often find that you get a better rate changing Pounds into foreign currency abroad.

I never ever use my credit card to buy things abroad.  Always cash.  Have just heard far too many stories about people getting their cards skimmed and the like.

My cards are used in official ATMs only.  I get a bit anal about it all, but I think the risks are there.

I carry cash in my front pocket.
I get out £200-300 of local currency in one hit.

Yes I had a panic stricken moment in Lanzarsnotty last year when a machine swallowed my card. Fortunately after a few minutes it spat it out again.

I might have used the same machine!  Had a few heart stopping moments last year as well with machines taking ages to process it.

Get a nationwide flexaccount (best rates ever) and draw money from the ATM, been doing this for years and never had any problems.

Come to think of it, i might check my chicks knicknacks when she comes home because my sex life has went massively down hill years ago

Nationwide have changed the rules a bit have they not?  It's not as good a deal as it was I believe, but still one of better ones.

I usually take a few hundred in the local currency before jetting off and then ATM whilst I'm out there.

I think they now make a charge for withdrawals but still have good rates.

This changes for me where i am staying.... Greece or Spain then its atm all the way as i wouldnt trust the safes.
If i feel confident with security and safes etc ill take all of my money with me in cash. Im going to Vegas in 2 weeks and im taking cash (and cards if needed).

Going off subject slightly - does anyone find carrying euros doesn't feel like real money?? If I had a £50 note in my wallet I'd be checking every 10minutes to make sure it was still there but carrying a 50Euro note (virtually same value) seems like carrying a fiver. Don't know why this is!!

Thats cos a 50 euro goes as far in a holiday resort as a fiver does here.  Feels like that sometimes anyway.
