Squat and Deadlift

am i correct to say that the main purpose of a deadlift is to do your lower back as you already do your legs when you squat. if this is so, would it not be better to swap your deadlift with straight leg deadlift as it has more emphasis on the lower back and hamstrings. or am i completely wrong. if so why is it that we do deadlifts aswell as squats

SLDL is supposed to target the hamstrings more than lower back, although will have some erector spinae work.

    Why is what? ? ?

The hamstrings are the main target for SLDL with the erector spinae as a heavy synergist.

However, the more you nail the form, then the more hamstring work is prevelant within the movement, taking away the backy feel of the exercise.

    Yes.

Deadlifts are a great exercise for all of the body, especially the lower back.

Deadlift works everything below the chin. At least I feel that way, especially when locked out in the up position. I think the abdominal aspects of the deads are something some people under consider.

.... Just my opinion. I don't really know much of the science.
