Squatting with Dumbells

Hey guys,

Quick question is Squatting with dumbells a good idea or not??

I can do traditional Squats but I suffer from a bad back thanks to a Mountain Bike accident a few years ago so tend to go light with them to save on the back stress.

But now I'm due to begin an Epi Cycle I'm considering Squatting with Dumbells by my sides so that I can go heavier & avoid the extra stress on the back because of the weight on my shoulders.

I realise my grip will be a limiting factor but I'm investing in straps to hopefully help here but I'm just wondering if you feel this exercise would be a good replacement or just stick to what I do now & just use more leg press instead to try & build the mass?

Thanks in advance

Neil

I would assume that it would change the mechanics to more of a deadlift move, pulling the weight will probably recruit the muscles in a different order to pushing the weight.

Try it and see how you get on.

if youve got a good back would hack squats/leg press be any good? what about doing back squats but not going as deep? that way you still work the quads hard and can go heavier without dropping deep where i always feel more stress on the back and glutes

Current goals: get back in the game

Ah I think you might be right I hadn't actually thought of that.

Will give it a go but I'm not expecting it to be that good now.

Reckon I'll probably just go as heavy as I feel comfortable with for regular squats & just keep upping the reps instead of the weight

    Thanks for the help

    or maybe front squats....
Your torso will stay more upright than with back squats.

Front squats if you're flexible enough

    Current PB's
    100kg Clean & Jerk
    110kg Bench
    190kg Deadlift
    140kg Back Squat
    120kg Front Squat
