Steroids and the police

I know this is a long shot and the main bulk of answers will probaby be speculation, but im trying to find out if the police recruitment drug test tests for Steroids as well as recreational drugs.

Ive been scouring google for hours and unfortunately havent been able to come up with anything conclusive, wondering if any of you MT'ers are able to shed some light on the subject.

Cheers

They don't. AAS tests are a) expensive and b) don't in themselves proove illegal activity. I know 2 or 3 in the force who use.

I think this should be a sticky... I have seen like a thousand times. No the police or fire department does not test for steroids. In fact 98% of the jobs out there do not test.

In the states it is illegal to posses or use without a prescription. I am surprised it is not illegal in the UK as well....

Why? Most countries have less severe AAS laws than america,  the surprising thing is that its illegal in the US.

When the federal government re-scheduled AAS and other hormones a few years back the AMA (American Medical Association) AND the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) BOTH went on record opposing the changes and saying they felt it unneccessary to treat AAS the same as other drugs.

Bush ignored their professional opinion and re-scheduled anyway, largely for political purposes.

So the main reason they're still legal here for personal use is that we havent (yet) been unlucky enough to have a government that was prepared to ban them to gain some political brownie points.

OP - back on topic, I am unaware of ANY job in the UK that steroid tests. The military have the caapacity to do so, but dont do routinely. The firebrigade, NHS, police, civil service etc etc DONT. I used to be involved in drug testing professionally, and have only EVER seen street drugs tested for.

That said, there are (well informed) rumours going around that the police intend to toughen their stance on officers using steroids

tac, I wish they were not illegal here. Like you said brownie points for certain people. Well maybe since my wife is a Doctor I can talk her into taking a job in the UK. I will join the Fire Dept. or an ambulance service there. Then life will be sweet!

this is basically because steroids starting ruining sports in the US, especially baseball, and the scared politicians just made it all illegal. Watch the film "Bigger, Stonger, Faster" if you havent its very interesting!

If you think that steroids aren't used in the US, you are very much wrong.  They are rife.

medicvoodoo just for your info some fire departments do test for anabolics. south yorkshire fire and rescue have  in place a policy called the substance misuse policy of september 2007 which includes anabolic steroids.
one guy  tested positive for AS which resulted in dismisal! regards.

This all puzzles me because i was watching a DEA documentary the other night and half of the agents looked like they were juicing! If it's illegal in the states then surely the last people who were going to use them would be cops.

    Off topic but...
Regarding the  legality of steroids in USA, Isn't Ronnie Coleman a serving police officer in America?
