Still with cellulite

Hi all,

I am very frustrated and I would like your advice. I have cellulite and had it for about 3-4 years now. I am very slim but I still have cellulite.

I am a 25 years old girl, 45kg, 5ft 3''

I have been going to the gym for about 2 years now but with no improvement on my cellulite. It stayed the same but did not get better. I have been doing cardio very rarely. I was mostly concentrating on heavy weights on my legs. However I was told that by concentrating on the weights I will build muscle underneath the fat.

Now my male friend that is very well build and goes to the gym told me that I should go jogging around the block for 3 times a week so I can loose the weight and hopefully the fat. Then I should go to the gym so I can build muscle on my bum and thighs.

What do you think?

I have also used different creams and Slendertone but with no improvement.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelly

I cant remember if i asked this last time you posted, are you on the pill?

you're incredibly light for your height, indicates to me that maybe although you're undoubtedly slim, you could have a high fat % from a lack of lean muscle..however you say you have been weight training for two years? I'm trying to get a picture but it doesnt quite add up.

I used to be skinny (5'1, 45kgs same as you) with a little cellulite, it didn't seem to make any sense to me either , why i was skinny but with cellulite. (but skinny doesnt mean lean as i now know!!!)

When i started weight training and got heavier (lean mass) I still had a little cellulite (although it was less) but gradually as body composition changes it improves. It really does!

The thing that got rid of the last bits for me was cleaning up my diet and coming off the Pill.

I am hazarding a guess that as you are still SO light , your body comp hasnt changed much (unless you started out at 6 stone?) so something must be wrong either with your diet or training, or something thats keeping you really oestrogenic in some way?!

    Hi Gymbabeliz,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
I am not on the pill and have never been on it. I was always slim. The maximum I have been was 50kgs and that was only for a few months. My average kgs in my life is 45. I think I gained cellulite because about 4 year ago I was eating foods with a lot of fat thinking that it would not do any harm. However now I am watching what I eat, I avoid fatty food and food with a lot of sugar. I think that is why it hasn't got worse.
But I need to do something to get rid of it.

Do you think loosing it first by jogging would be best and then go to the gym so I can add some muscle?

What do you think would be best?

    Many thanks.

90% of the solution to your problem is diet. Cellulite is just bodyfat, it looks a little different but it's just fat. You need to combine a calorie controlled diet with your exercise to drop some bodyfat and the 'cellulite' will go.

Go to the Diet and Nutrition forum and post your typical daily diet and many people there will be happy to give you advice on how to improve it.

    Thanks for the advice.

I know what you mean about diet, I am just afraid I will get to be super slim and still have cellulite.

Regarding the exercise, what kind of exercise should I do to loose the cellulite?

    Thanks again.

Unfortunately there's no particular exercise that will make you lose cellulite. I would keep cardio in your routine at an intensity that will burn bodyfat , because the last thing you want to do is burn muscle and up your bodyfat more! . Optimum heartrate is usually at around 65% of your max but if you want to be 100% guaranteed that the energy is coming from fat you could have the Origin test that everyone is getting excited about on here! If you're anywhere near essex ?

Diet is key but 'diet' doesnt mean stop eating and get skinny. If you keep your protein high and train hard you will put on size and weight without adding fat and then you can change your body composition.

    Thanks for the advice GymBabeLiz!

I am not familiar about this test. What is it? No, I am not in Essex, I am based in London.

Could you write me a programme to do please?

What about the diet? Do you know of a good one so or should I post to the Nutrition forum?

    Many thanks.

    this is the test http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/article-originfit-system.asp

it cost £75 but if you've been spending all this money on creams and stuff you may think its worth it. I know what total anguish cellulite can cause and thats why i think you might be prepared to do this!

It would be good for you because you can be confident that your cardio is only burning bodyfat, and of course you should carry on with the heavy weights to build a nice firm body, and so not get thinner looking.

Probably best to post in the nutrition forum for diet, but generally make sure you're getting a steady supply of protein, eat 5-6 times a day and keep an eye on your carbs.

What weights routine are you doing at the moment and how often are you training?

    Interesting this.

It sounds to me like putting on muscle mass would help.

Gymbabe, would a 5x5 or 5x8 concentrating on compounds programme be suitable for the female trainer in this instance?

Depends if she feels 5x5 works for her or not. I dont like it personally but thats just me. But it sounds like whatever workout kelly was doing before hasnt made much difference so change of routine in whatever way might be a good move.

Thanks for all the information GymBabeLiz and for the suggestion DaveH.

I would like to go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week for weights and then jog around the block for loosing the fat. What do you think?

Is there a gym program that you suggest I should do?

    Many thanks again.

    Kelly.

I'd keep the jog as a light jog and make sure you go for at least 30 minutes.

For weights if you can go 3 times a week you could do a split something like:

    chest/tris abs
    back/bis /shoulders
    legs / abs

Two or three exercises per body part with 3 sets of 10 for each. I just say this because this is what i started off with and it seemed to set me up quite well.

I dont know if somebody wants to suggest a 5x5 compound program or push pull alternatives as they arent my thing?

    Kelly,

Have you checked out Frankie's Mass Builder in the routines forum?

That has options for a 5x5 or 5x8 routine.

Frankie does not train women but I think it's one of the best programmes around...

He divides the days into PUSH, PULL LEGS using compounds...

I won't write out what he has put because it his work, but if you put something down here perhaps we can all chip in and perhaps Gymbabe and co can critique for the female trainer.

    Ok,

This is the routine I came up with:

    all 5x8

    Day 1
    Deadlifts
    Barbell Row
    Barbell Curls

    Day 2
    Flat Barbell Bench
    Close Grip Press
    Standing Shoulder Press

    Day 3
    Squat
    Stiff Leg Deadlift
    Sit Ups

    Questions:
    1) Is there enough ab work?
    2) Should I go jogging twice a week for 30 minutes?
    3) Should the jogging be not on the days that I am training?

Please, please review so I can re-register to the gym.

    Thanks so much!
    Kelly.

From a males perspective I love the routine.

Ab word once a week is good.

The cardio you mention is good because your heart (the most important muscle) will benefit.

And yes definitely the running/cardio should be on separate days to the workouts.

But as I say this is from a males perspective...

5x8 is a bit much, imho. How long you been training?

I follow a similar one with:

    Monday,

    Deadlift 4x6,
    Bent over Row 4x6.
    Close grip Chin 4x6.

    Wednesday

    Weighted Dips 4x6
Standing Press 4x6 (prefer to do shoulders here)
    *Incline Dumbell Press 4x6

May do close grip bench or flyes. Depends how I feel

    Friday

    Squats 4x6
    SLDL 4x6
    Weighted Crunches 3x8

I'm male. Been training coming up to a year. You could try it 3x8 if your new to lifting to get into the swing of things.

I also think the origin test is going to be worthwhile. It's only 75 quid but if it takes the guess work out of everything its got to be worth it. I'm going to try and get one sorted at the end of feb (when I get paid). Weird thing was been looking at a kick boxing class and it's in the same place! Small world!
