Stretching Before And/Or After Work Out?

I read several years back somewhere that stretching BEFORE you work out can actually lower your strength in the gym & be dangerous because the muscles are being stretched without as much blood in them etc, and that you should always stretch AFTER the work out instead.  I of course warm up before working out, but I don't stretch until I'm finished.

I've been reading through Arnold's encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding recently, and came across something he'd written about stretching.  The book suggested actually stretching before a work out as well as after, because it increases flexibility and can increase your range of motion with exercises.  It doesn't mention anything about a lack of strength problem after stretching, which is what I'd read some years back.

Can any of you confirm for me whether I should stick to just stretching after a work out, or whether to start incorporating pre work out stretches into my routine as well.

Thanks a lot.

Personally, unless you are particularly inflexible I see no need to stretch, even then you shouldn't do it before a workout. I have tight hamstrings, which I stretch at home long after my workout.
Light warmup sets are enough to prime the muscles for action.

Arnold did a lot of stuff that probably wasn't optimal.

Static stretching is good for flexibility, but doing it before a workout offers no benefits to strength or injury prevention
Dynamic stretching can help to prevent injuries, but it's less effective than warmup sets, and the micro tears you create in your muscles will actually weaken you before your workout.

Conclusion, stretching is good, but not before you work out.

If static stretching does improve the quality of movement then thats a good thing. Although this can be as easily done with dynamic movement or simply using light warm ups to do the same thing. However their still may be a need for some targeted stretching.

However best way to improve mobility is to do something that will help every day.

As the muscle will be stretching and contracting through warm up sets and work sets, it's not going to do you any harm to have a little stretch before, I usually do, nothing too dramatic however as the warm ups take care of this.

If you love something let it go,if it comes back to you it's yours,if it doesn't it never was.

I guess different approaches work better for different people.

Personally I've found from experience that just going straight into warm up sets leaves me more exposed to possible injury or extreme DOMS in the days after the workout. For me a combination of light static and dynamic stretches followed by warm up sets is best preparation for my workout.
