Surround Sound Gaming

I've got a 5.1 surround sound system on my pc, but none of the first person shooters I have seem to utilise it. I've set up up correctly on control panel and everything works fine in media player etc.

Surely modern games must support it?

Any ideas?

yes all modern games will support it, you must be missing some settings somewhere.

Try going to your control panel, sounds and audio devices, click the advanced button and check to see if you have the right speakers selected.

Is the sound options in the game turn on to Dolby.

I had this problem for ages till i discovered it was the settings in my Soundcard.not the windows settings but the settings in the Software of the actual soundcard.

I think my system must just be crap cos I've tried everything to get it to work and sound only ever comes out of the 2 front speakers and never the back ones. Well annoying

    Is it onboard sound?
Have you just upgraded to 5.1 and need to set the jumpers on the motherboard or change the a bios setting?
Are the speakers plugged in properly?
Or have you installed a 5.1 card and disabled onboard sound?

Onboard sound yes. It works fine in all windows based applications.

In the control panel should i set the speaker configuration to 5.1 or surround sound? Im sure ive tried both but at least if Im on the right setting troubleshooting might be easier!

Just started playing F.E.A.R last night, good game. bit tough tho!

I'll have a better look in the soundcard software tonight, it is prety primitive. Maybe theres an updated version on the net.

Seems such a shame to only have 2 speakers work

Seems fecking odd really, its a bugger i need to see it to work it out.

I would assume by now youve tried both Surround setups in windows, when you are playing the game does the "sound" sound right? for instance when you fire a gun do you hear the shot faintly (as if it should be heard from the Centre speaker) in the L & R channel...or does it sound like it been setup for just Stero speakers.

How about the dxdiag tests, there's sound tests in there, might throw up some answers.

Go to the run prompt and type in dxdiag

The sound is great but only from 2 speakers. I'll give it another whirl later. I've tried both setups in windows.

    Cheers for the help.

Well I'm glad thats sorted, enjoy the gaming mate.

A good pair of headphones can give a 'similar' effect to all those with just stereo sound, blocking out all the ambient noise really puts you in the game
