Taking Holiday from Work???

OK I get 25 days a year hoilday! Everytime I want to take some of it my boss asks me "why? why do you need it?" Do I actually have to give a reason to take days from my holiday days! Also how much notice do I have to give? Is 4 days enough?? For some reason he makes it a real big issue if I take time off! Even when we havent got any work on.. But I work to live not the other way around!

Know what you mean mate...whats it got to do with them, theyre YOUR holidays right?!

I have to give whatever time I want off in advance.....eg; if i want 4 days off, give them 4 days notice.

    Hello.

you dont have to tell them why its your holiday your entitled to it

depending on the company 7 or 14 days notice is required unless you can get emergency holiday

That stinks. I have had a boss who wouldn’t grant me holiday when I found out my mum got cancer even though nobody else was off that week....some companies and bosses are plain right difficult.

That in and off itself is not sufficent reason. But then it was still your holiday entitlement regardless. Depending on your contract of emplyment you can take unpaid emergency leave, carers leave (ie: to take your mum for treatment), maternity / paternity leave or just plain good old fashioned annual leave.

Any boss that moans 'why' when you ask for leave is a cock. They gave it to you, you want to use it, so what's the problem? If it leaves them short staffed then they can ask for you to take alternative dates (we used to have it so that only 10% could be off at any one time). With actual Police Officers they can have their leave cancelled for emergenices (Trafalger Square / Poll tax riots for example as well as the miners strike - hence the big wedges of cash earnt by coppers then).

we work 4 on 4 off, so we have to get a lad off the other shift to do 2 extra shifts. even if we give them 6 months notice we still dont get our holidays unless we get the other lad to sign to say hes goin to cover me. shít isnt it. But to be fair we cover each other so its very rare we cant have a shift we want off.

Most companies usually have some kind of policy to say how much notice you need to give to take a holiday but what you are taking the holiday for is no ones business but your own.
Sometimes it depends on whether the boss is a power hungry little t**t that has no life apart from work and should probally go get laid, but you still dont have to give a reason!!!!!!!!

Just having one more member of staff would help. That way a you'll never have everyone in all the time and thus be able to cover from within the day shift. Is what you do security?? I did a very brief stint at this and they had a similar set up.

This is one of the reasons I'm self employed: I can take time off whenever I want

    if this was to me.......

yeah we've tried to get them to do this but they wont add any more staff, we wanted to go on this shift pattern so we originally agreed to it, its not security work. just a continuos output machine so it cant stop.

Your employer agreed to your annual leave entitlement as did you when you started work/ as is probably stated in your contract. You should not need to give a reason to use this! The only reason I can think of is if you are in a small company where if your holiday clashes with someone who has already booked the same time off therefore causes staff shortages, which spaeking as a boss are an absolute bloody nightmare when you have deadlines to make.

A holiday planner is on view to all our staff and when they start employment with us it's explained about us being a small company etc and to try if posible not to take holiday which clashes with others.... but still some will seemingly not take any notice of this

at my old place the holiday form waas called an "absence request" form it also asked you to give a reason for your holiday request ie what u were doing! I always left it blank, my brother works at the same company now and i told him this week to try and think when he will be needing days off up until xmas and booking them in now. You could then say it was bad management if they couldnt arrange cover or a replacement for any of the days u have requested, especialloy as there is 2 lads doing the same role, the company couldnt have many excuses for givving you a hard time, unless the other lad was absent thru sick etc ime dont give them (bosses) any excuses to be a tw@t or they will be
