Out of interest why do people who have not attended either uni care who wins? Is there some religious , geographical , class or other less obvious difference between the two?

So glad the BBC decide to show this highly awaited toff fest as opposed to bidding for the England qualifier.

No offence mate but it's a shame you see it that way. They really are top atheletes.

Far better ****ing roll models than the average footballer. Kids watching today would have learned a lot more about sportsmanship and decorum than they ever would from our shower of a national football team.

sure mate, but no getting away from the fact that the majority of them are from very priviledged backgrounds.  they are no better than any of hundreds of other athletes in the country.

if mixing with toffs and upper class snobs is a good day out, then im sure its a marvlous place.

Perhaps, but the BBC should be aiming to give the people what it wants seeing as we pay for the crap.

Isn't disliking/judging someone for their background a bit 'off' ???????? I'm not saying they are better than any other atheletes but your original post was very disparaging of their abilities based on their backgrounds.

The nation who pay for their TV license. Ask them if they'd rather watch England or the boat race and there is always only one winner.

Who cares what background they come from they are awesome athletes and the race is an iconic institution.
Some of the above comments are just as bad as someone saying they wouldn;t watch footabll as its 'played by a bunch of chav scum'!
Alos, and thankfully, the BBC dons't broadcast all its shows based on some kind of democratic/majority country wide vote. If it did it'd no doubt be some cross between ITV and Channel 5 :]

The  boat race will not I suspect have cost the BBC much. I also suspect there are many people who dont even have cable or satelite tv who want to watch the Boat race , Grand National, Wimbledon and other tradintional sporting events so I think it's more appropriate that the BBC bid for this event rather than trying to compete with Murdoch for the shamefull display that is international football.

i just dont agree with the whole university snobbery, and for me, these two universitys are very representative of the whole thing.

    why is the race iconic?

Nobody asked 'what boat race?' lol

Well the above goes to show it is iconic. As to why. No idea but there ya go.

I don't agree with Uni snobbery, however I am not going to assume that everyone that takes part in the race is a snob.
