The Only Way Is Essex - Format

I have asked this on another forum and didn't really get a coherent answer.

When this programme says the 'people' are real but the situations are set up - what does that mean? That they are actors with a script FFS or is it really their daily lives with a script?

Annoying at is it, I actually enjoy it watching with my other half but she insists they are real people living real lives who are directed in a certain way.
Huh?

as far as i know they are real people, and they are put into situations by the scriptwriters and their reactions are meant to be real!

It's the London part of Essex. Come out our way to the East side of Essex and you'll not see orange people and we have loads of countryside.

Basically their is a basic script, but it works a little like this, obviously everything behind them is staged/ setup, scripted to a point that they can guess their reactions to the event, where they go, but things like reactions after etc are usually just that, no scripting....all edited heavily, News of the World would have a field day, to make something look OTT dramatic or more important than they are, think the name is reality entertianment, or some other crap.

    Yes, Braintree is rustic...

Seriously there are several different 'versions' of essex - there's the London overspill to the west and along the Thames, which is basically the same as the east-end of London, same people etc (dagenham through to tilbury)

then there's the 'posh' western parts - also full of Londoners, but londoners who have made a bit of money and 'come up in the world', mixed in with commuter belt. This is where the TV programme is set (Brentwood).

Then gradually as you go North (Saffron Waldon or colchester), or east towards the coast (maldon, mersea) essex becomes more country-fied, small villages, farms, and the people are more traditional essex than first or second generation Londoners that have moved out - tend to have a milder version of the suffolk/norfolk 'country bumpkin' accent

Where desmo and welshy live is kind of on the border - go south and west from there and you're into London chav, or London-chav-with-money territory, go north or east and there's a lot of countryside, fields, little pubs, salt marshes and it becomes quite a nice place

    Rustic....hahahaha, quality

The programme is one of my guilty plessures too if I catch it on, for some reason I can't turn it off. But it is a shame when people see it and think that is what Essex is like.
