Thick Bar Holds - Which Grip?

I was wondering what hand position you guys use for thick bar holds. When doing holds using the same hand position I have noticed that the bar slips out of hands b4 grip fails OR is that grip failure. Using alternate grip I can hold the bar much longer, but is this as effective as using the same grip? Any comments guys?

I worked up to 300kilos plus on a 2" bar and well over a 1000 lbs (partial dealifts) on a 1.5" bar and I would alternate to make sure everything was going to be ok when I went to the max.
