Keith - go and have a balls to the wall event session (either Dave or Whey HQ) and find out your Max's and then think about it.
You'll be shocked to see the difference using equipment regularly can make.

Keep an eye out for comps and what sort of level they are, then decide if you want to do it.

I went straight into opens without any event training and learned a fcuking lot, seriously thought never knew there was novice events. lol

He wasn't ready for any of this. I don't think he was serious about it.

You seem dead-set on not doing an open yet. You are getting some excellent advice from some very experienced people, but don't appear to be taking any notice. I'm not having a pop at you either, but if you do an open, and at the very worst, get your ass kicked, in the grand scheme of things, so what? You will gain the competition experience of using the heavier weights and equipment, going up against guys who are stronger, faster, etc than you, and you might even surprise yourself.

Ah right, basically then you're a fcuking cripple who can only lie down on a bench for sports nowadays?

    I agree with JB
You seem to have already decided long ago and just see this advice as being 'bullied'. Stop being concerned about how you look, This is a learning curve, you have to take the body blows in the opens to learn. Everyone who as ever got anywahere in this sport as been prepared to take the beatings to learn the game. That is the mental attitude and fortitude you need for this game.

Many lads who are currently making real progress and set to be big in the future like Shawn and Laurence, served their time in the opens as soon as possible.

You know most lads with the right spirit move to the opens after placing in the top 5, You won. The only difference between them and yourself is your affraid whilst they embraced the chance to compete and learn from the top men in the sport. It's all about whats in your head and your heart and you need to decide what you really want because all these posts on the subject are not doing you any favours

What do you think Keith, I imagine you think he looks stupid.

well that says more about your outlook because from me he gets a load of respect for having the balls to test himself and he never quit. The man as real heart. I know all the other lads would agree with that.

I'll tell you what I think Keith. I think the guy in the video has heart, determination, and a real desire to test himself. Right now you may be physically stronger than him, but with his attitude he will improve and will soon be placing well in decent contests whilst you are still worrying about how you look.

You did well at the weekend, but doing a novice comp is like riding a bike with stabilisers, after while if you are still doing it people think you are a retard. Better to come last in an open and give it your all, than hang around in the novices hiding from a challenge. A novice contest is a stepping stone, a chance to get your feet wet. Then you move on.

Get over yourself and do an open!

I love the text on his video that said 'personal victory' after he loaded one barrel. That said a lot about the mans spirit.

Oh and you may find most promoters running novice events will not allow you to enter another after taking a win at the severn valley.
I would not let you enter, I don't believe Colin lewis would nor Colin Anderson

I have far more respect for someone like him who just wants to get on with it and give it his absolute best regardless of the outcome than I would for someone who only wants to enter the comps he can win.

I'm a world champion powerlifter in the WPF (world body for the BPO) with a world record in the bench press of 250kgs yet last week at the IPF world bench press, I got my opener of 260 but failed 272.5 twice and as a result, finished in 10th place overall in the 125+ class. There were 5 guys there who all attempted 337.5kgs so it shows the difference in class/ability/strenght etc betweeen me and the REAL big guns but I feel far more "proud" to say that I came 10th in the IPF worlds than I do when telling people that I'm the WPF world champion because I know that the result in the IPF is a TRUE understanding of where I stand in the world as opposed to simply being a paper world champion in the WPF.

I didn't laugh at him. He gave everything he had. Can't ask for more than that. And I bet if there had been sound instead of music everyone would have been encouraging him. So I would say do opens. You're getting sound advice here from some of the top guys in the country. Take it!

But in your defence, you're still very young to be that strong and just come from a bodybuilding background so I can understand the self doubt, but you need to get over it.

I was the same when I started in bench. The attitude was, "here's me lifting with all these real powerlifters". It's when I got over that I started winning. What's your ultimate goal? Will you achieve that in novice events? If not, move on, and in each open try to place at least one spot higher than the one before and aim for at least one pb each open. That way you'll be succeeding every time, irrespective of where you finish. And if you keep that progression curve, you'll be placing in big events within a couple of years and we might even see you on Channel 5!

Everyone has self doubt, my friend, but winners learn to ignore it.

Winners are just dreamers who didn't quit

just to add to the quality comments above, that guy on the vid deserves respect! Sure, he was out of his depth, but he never gave up - not many guys can say they would be able to just go on and on in that kind of situation, many would probably fake an injury or something A person like that would make an awesome training partner, he doesnt seem to give up and would always keep you on your toes!

Everything everybody has posted is smack on Keith!

And like others have posted now you have won a novice comp you will find it hard to find a novice comp that will accept you as you have already won one!

you have had your stint in the paddling pool now it time to take of your arm bands and jump in the deep end - sink or swim!

i have so much respect 4the guy in the video. He kept trying and trying. In strongman events its not just a physical thing(although 4 obvious reasons it helps),i think it has alot to do with posotive mental attituide.....getting past the thought in your head...the little voice saying "what you doin, this is heavy ,and hurtingn your hands",learning to ignore that voice and grim and bear it.The guy in the vid is 60% there ,all he needs now is a bit more stregnth.
You did well on sunday and no one can take that away from u.Im sure there were guys there on sunday who will b doin opens soon...The guy who came second (Matt Jones-my training partner) has his 1st open in 3 weeks, and he came behind u.
I was against you in most the events.I came 5th which im well proud of...a nice start....iI tried my hardest in all the events.

So Just do it even if you come last you can only get better..And will meet some cool guys,And if your plan is too get to WSM (which it states in your signiture)...with the mind set you have at the moment you aint gotta a chance....so pull ya socks up chalk up ya hands, put ya belt on...and GET INVOLVED,,,,,,........

ps..matt still wants ya number..HA HA

    Ok,
Just to clear a few things,
I never said that he looked stupid, I was just posing the question as to what other people thought!
I too think that he has massive balls!

To give you a true background to me, so that you know where I am coming from,
This time last year I was 14 stone! Beleimic,
So it is not quite as easy as what some people think for me to forget this,
TO get to 18stone 4lb took so much will power to eat that you wouldnt believe!

I am also a very insecure person with an absolute gorgeous fiancee, and know this is going to sound stupid, (to normal people) but I dont want her not to be attracted to me any more!

I am not wanting to just stay in the Novice comps at all,
I will pledge now, never to enter another so dont worry,

Lots of event training to come, then I will enter my first open!
I have only ever had 1 training session with Dave Meer,

I do appreciate all of your posts, I can assure you that the advice has been taken on board,
I am still a complete novice in this sport and dont make out as If I know everything at all,

    Many thanks,

I have to agree with what the other guys are saying Keith, and I am one person (more than anybody) who understands your comments and where you are coming from. Ordinarily, I would tell you not to listen to too many peoples advice as it will become confusing to make a decision. However, the comments I am reading are all positive and are consistent.

JB is bang on with what he said, "You are getting some excellent advice from some very experienced people, but don't appear to be taking any notice."

    Cheers Spider-Man,
You know that I am taking this on board,
    It is really hard,
I have already lost 9lb since the comp mate,
AS I am going on holiday, I know that I am an idiot, but I cant help it,

I will be entering an Open, just do a lot more event training thats all,
I only wanted to enter 1 more novice comp to get experience thats all, not to win and look like an idiot,
After all SURELY I am still a novice, thats all I was thinking,
