Thumb print signing in at work on monday.

New company taking us over on monday.  And instead of the usual signing in they will be getting us to put our thumb in and type in a number.
Only time I did this before was visiting a mate in Pentonville
A couple of the lads are not happy with this.  Is it legal for companies to do this.

Cheers all

of course its legal. why wouldnt it be?
one of the hospitals i worked at had this system-the only difference is, is that there is no sweet talking your boss into letting you go an hour early and still signing you out at the time you were meant to finish.
    easier to catch people out.

Im not too fussed myself.  Some seem to think it could be used for other reasons.   Especially as this company have managed to lose a few peoples bank details

I have to admit that a company which employed these measures would not be for me.

You did gain far too much fat though,I mean, you're not muscular at all, you're just a fat mess.

What would be your objection to the system? It's not like they are tagging you and tracking your position - would it be acceptable for you to have to sign in and out?

I would rather work for people who felt they could trust me.

But we have a supervisor on the door always logging us in anyway.  Why not clock in.  Anyway as I am only a porter I am not sure how this works.  Is it harmless.    Its nice being trusted.  Great boost for morale.
Also has anyone heard of the tupe rule.  apparently it states that a new company cannot go in and change things right away and that they have to wait 3 months and then they can start to make changes.  There not in the door yet and have already changed the pay structure from fortnightly to weekly or monthly.
I would be grateful if someone could explain this tupe rule in porters terms.

I understand your concerns mate.I am not keen on company's and goverment's wanting to know the in's and out's of my asshole. We use our security pass to log in and out at work.Suits me and them fine.

You need to have some sort of trust and confidence in your staff.

of course i understand there should be trust between employers and employees, but in these days of privatisation, there is little of this "trust" that you speak of.
at the end of the day, if you are arriving at work, and leaving, at the correct time, there is not a problem.

    Which is what i do.

So why can't my swiping my security pass be good enough?.We have a fairly low staff and i am sure they would know if i was not there and got someone to swipe me in.

All this Big Brother type stuff is intrusive, invasive bollocks IMO.

that was directed at the OP, not you.
yes, i agree its bollocks, but thats just the way it is these days. nothing you can do about it, other than get on with it.
it seems to me, like companies these days, especially the large private "service solution" ones, actively try to catch their staff out, and attempt to get them in as much trouble for it as possible.

The West.  Just sent you a pm.   Its so annoying as contractors seem to be more dishonest.  For instance I will never do overtime as it is at a lower rate and bank staff do not get london waiting either.  And also before my time there when this happened before the long term porters never even got there week in hand and were loaned money by the company that as now been unsuccessful.

damn right. they generally are a shady bunch, they expect you to be robots, everyone should be exactly the same, not allowed a personality or opinion.
the portering at my hospital used to be nhs, they gave the contract to a company called ISS, and ever since the standards of portering have gone downhill. not the guys faults, but they are getting so racked off with management, they aren't happy in their work anymore, and it shows.
overtime getting paid at a lower rate than standard is a joke.
