Tired Footballers

Meant to post this a few days ago. What do you all think of David Bentley pulling out of the England squad for the U21 European Championships?

Personally I thinks he's totally wrong. There's no greater sporting honour than representing your country in an international tournament and he's spoilt his chances of playing for the senior team in the future.

I also think he's been badly advised and possibly pressurised by his club. If so, ironic that his manager is an ex international player and manager.

No axe to grind here. I'm an Aberdeen and Scotland man. Just think it's indicative of the club game taking over more and more from the international game.

Essentially it is an over-21 on the brink of a full cap pulling out of an Under-21 tournament that he should not even be picked for.

Either play in a mickey mouse tournament, or get a good rest and start next season firing on all cylinders to give yourself the best chance of making the full squad? No choice imo.

Bloody h8ll. Well done Integra mate. Someone agrees with you on a footie thread!
I disagree with you both, though. Letting down your teammates/country for a longer rest stinks imo.

I think if you read the other football threads properly, there are equal numbers agreeing and disagreeing with me.

Usually the neutrals agree with me, and the fans of the players/clubs involved throw their rattles out of their prams

I don't support any team - just think you talk absolute drivel.

I think for a young lad the idea of being too tired to play for your country is a little poor - also he may have harmed is future chances (McClaren apparently advsed him to go) or you could look at it by getting the rest he will play better and have more chance of breaking into the seniors side.

McClaren advised David Beckham that he thought Aaron Lennon was better than him. I think that says all you need to know about McClaren.

i agree fully,we seem to produce good footballers with the wrong mental attitude pussyfooting around with players who always seem to be injured at the first opportunity, imo this is where we fail.

He is not letting the country or teammates down though, he is just choosing not to play for a team that he is too old for anyway, with players who he doesnt usually play with anyway.

Instead he is choosing a longer rest so that he can give 100% to his employers and colleagues.

    No it isnt.

McClaren advised him to go, I assume because it would improve his chances of playing for England.

McClaren advised Beckham he was not good enough to play for England. He changed his mind pretty quickly.

The key to this point is that McClaren is always wrong

Yes it is, it may be that McClaren will refuse to pick him in the future. Pretty obvious really. I said MAY not definite - the way you are so certain makes me laugh I would love to know where you got all your life experience from

Bentley played a lot of games for Blackburn this season and they start in the intertoto cup early on in pre-season so he would basically not get any rest. Its the Euro 2008 next summer so i understand his decision, he wants to be fresh and at his best for all of next season and try to break into the senior squad. If blackburn agreed he could miss out on the intertoto cup and get extra rest then that would of been great.

The England players have experience of playing in tournaments in the summer and advised Bentley to miss out as he would hit a brick wall next season

Yeah, I can see the logic in that. Perhaps a rethink is in order.
