Touche's 5x5 compound journal (cutting)

Started listing last spring and thing's were going real good, but I had a real bad winter, basically didnt lift for the whole season for one reason or another, so now I'm back at it, hoping a journal can help with the motivation...

I'm aiming to double all my current lifts, was halfway there if it hadnt been for the 6 months of inactivity :
Last week was basically just getting a feel for where I am at the moment:

Sunday
Deadlifts
5x60kg
5x100kg
5x110kg
5x110kg
5x110kg

Monday
Bench
5x60kg
5x60kg
5x60kg
5x60kg
5x60kg

Wednesday
Squats
5x60kg
5x70kg
5x75kg
5x75kg
5x75kg

Friday
Military Press
5x40kg
5x42.5kg
5x42.5kg
5x42.5kg
5x42.5kg

My aims are pruely strength orientated, hope I can double my current lifts. So that's 220kg deadlift, 120kg bench, 150kg squat.

    Good luck!

I find keep a journal of food lifts and cardio keeps me on the straight and narrow as I dont want to have to explain things I shouldnt do!

    Sunday
    Deadlifts
    5x110kg
    5x115kg
    5x117.5kg
    2x120kg + 3x117.5kg
3x120kg, tried 115kg and couldnt lift it so after a couple mins of laying on the floor feeling dizzy I went home...

btw I should mention I'm a uni student and my gym is about 20 seconds away, in the basemet of the building I live in... kinda depressing I've taken so much time off with the facilities so close and free! When I had to drive to the gym and pay subscription I was there whenever I could! :\

    hey seungmena :)

Thanks for the encouragement! I think I'm just gonna do lifts for the 1st few weeks, then maybe add cardio and food to the journal. Knowing me, if I commit too much to start with I'll end up doing nothing and having another 6 month break :P

    Monday
    Bench
    5x60kg
    5x62.5kg
    3x65kg, 2x62.5kg
    3x62.5kg, 2x60kg
    5x60kg

Wanted to figure out exactly where I was, and thought maybe some of my strength may have come back, but not a lot really, oh well, gotta work at it! :)

Felt a twinge in my back earlier in the day, an outside chance it could have been DOMS, but more likely it was the effects of bad form in my deadlifts yesterday, gotta get that sorted out before I do em again, so next weeks deadlifts are gonna be replaced with some wide grip pullups and maybe some deadlift practice with the help of an unloaded bar, a friend and a video cam ;)

Oh and I hate cottage cheese, that came back to me today :P

ugh, almost 2 weeks since I posted, had exams, essays and research protocols to get done and had no time to train at all :(

anyway, managed to find time today...

    Saurday
    Squat
    5x75kg
    5x75kg
    5x77.5kg
    5x77.5kg
    4x77.5kg

Similar weight to my last squat session, but I went real deep this time, set the bars on the cage lower than usual and found I could go lower than I thought, and felt it a LOT more.

Sat down for an hour when I got back to my room, and when I tried to get up it was like "DAMN, I can barely move!" which is prolly a good thing :)

Real dissapointed in my break, but hey, not much I can do about it now, just gotta make sure it doesnt happen again :\

This should be interesting. Just to see how someone progresses on just using 1 major compound per day. Good luck buddy,

    Alex.

    hey dg and CHTHONIC :)

Yeah, just doing deads, bench, squats and mil press, trying to put as much effort into the lifts as possible, I've grown doing this before, so might aswell get back into it with a routine I enjoyed :)

When most people enter the gym they think it's really bad, no new equiptment in the past 5 years, some dating back 30 years... but for weight lifting it's great! I can workout at any time, day or night and there's a power cage for me to bench/squat in at 3am without worrying about killing myself :)

My diet at the moment isnt great, I'm a student and can have anywhere from £0.50 to £10 (not joking!) to feed me for the week! I know about proper calories and protein intake (I'm a medical student, got under a year until I qualify as a doc), and when I have cash I try and take in around 3500 cals a day and 200g of protein... but if I take today as an example I've probably eaten around 2500 cals and only 100g of protein. Right now I'm not using any supplements, not even a whey shake simply cos I cant afford any :P My phone just got a call restriction (means I cant call anyone) as I've not been able to pay my £35 bill for the month, so I really do mean it when I say I'm too skint to buy some!

Anyway, thanks for the support guys :)

    Sunday
    Military Press
    3x47kg, 2x44.5kg
    5x44.5kg
    5x44.5kg
    5x44.5kg
    5x44.5kg

That's up a little since last mil press session, so I'm happy I guess... but 44.5kg is so far off my best, and my shoulders used to be miles ahead of every oher part of my body, I cant help but feel a little depressed about it, oh well, gotta keep working at it, and keep the numbers going up! :)

DOMS from yesterday's squats are the worst I've ever felt in my legs, think putting the bars lower is something I'll always be doing now. I know squatting lower than parallel isnt supposed to be a good idea, so I'll have to watch it...

I'm at home (home home, not uni), so this session was done in my bedroom with my old kit rather than in the gym. Since I dont have the luxuary of a power cage in my bedroom, I had to be a little careful and not push myself to get that last rep if I thought there was any chance of it not going all the way up, and also was taking longer than usual breaks between sets to make sure I was ready for the next set and wouldnt have the barbell collapse on me :P

    Wednesday
    Bench
    5x60.5kg
    5x64.5kg
    5x64.5kg
    4x64.5kg
    4x64.5kg

An improvement over last session under difficult circumstances, so happy I guess... looking forward to deadlifts tomorrow :)

    Thursday
    Deadlift
    5x100kg
    5x120kg
    4x125kg
    5x122.5kg
    4.122.5kg

That's a good improvement over last deadlift session, over 3 weeks ago! I managed "2x120kg + 3x117.5kg" for my best set... but I'm still not happy! my gloves are giving way and in set 3 I noticed blisters forming, which distracted me a bit :\ Also I try and do 1 rep 'left underarm, right overarm' mixed grip, then switch over, but I'm finding doing reps with 'right underarm, left overarm' grip harder :
Think my last squat session helped these deadlifts, I noticed the difficulty isnt coming from my legs anymore, it's more my arms that are having trouble when I'm doing the lift, think that's why the grip difference I mentioned earlier came out today. Maybe need some direct arm work now?

chuck the gloves. get some chalk. do some grip work. works wonders. it'll also mean that whenever you shake someones hand you'll want to squeeze it as hard as you can.

but but!! grip stuff sounds like hard work! :P

to be honest I think I kinda know I need to add some grip work to progress... :
oh well, if I didnt want hard work guess I should have joined a knitting class... will look up info on grip work and maybe incorporate it into my next session...

    Sunday
    Military Press
    6x46kg
    6x48kg
    6x49kg
    5x50kg
    5x51kg

After my last deadlift session where I had a good jump of about 5kg, I decided to start at my military presses at 46kg (44.5kg was pretty damn difficult last time), and to my suprise it felt sooo easy! I managed 6 reps to prove to myself it was too light! In the end I was pressing 51kg, that's 6.5kg up on a week ago!

Pretty happy with this session :)

I'm at home again, so I decided to wait until my squat day (when I should be back at uni with a concrete floor) until I added a little farmers walk.

At home, cant do proper squats so I thought I might aswell try something new! My 1st time doing overhead squats...

    Monday
    Overhead Squat
    10x27kg
    10x27kg
    8x37kg (damn hard!!)
    10x27kg
    10x27kg

I wasnt too serious about this workout, it was more of a 'try them and see what they're like' experience, and I have to say they're DAMN hard! My shoulders seemed to want to give up more than my legs, then again I found I couldnt squat anywhere near as low as I'd like! My legs just didnt want to bend as much...

    Nest Day (Tuesday)...
Woke up with insane DOMS in my lateral delts from the overhead squats, I honestly thought I had done some damage and it wasnt just DOMS, but it's lessened through the day and is now at a point where it's recognisable, it's also bilateral which is reassuring :)

Since my legs didnt get a great workout from the overhead squats and I'm back at uni today, I did some back squats.

    Tuesday
    Squats
    5x70kg
    5x80kg
    5x85kg
1x87.5kg, 3x85kg (2nd rep at 87.5kg I got stuck and had to sit down, but felt I should have managed it if I was more focused)
    5x85kg

Now that's a GREAT workout! I was pushing 5x77.5kg last squat session, and this time I bumped it up by 7.5kg squatting real deep too :)

This week I added 5kg to my deadlift, 6.5kg to my military press and 7.5kg to my squat... how can I not be happy with that?! :) Not sure I'll manage to add much to my bench in my next session, but we'll see :)

Thats QMW isnt it? Im at GKT (part of Kings), have a few friends over at Barts too.

Looking forward to your journal, aiming to double your lifts is no mean feat! Either thats being ambitious or you must have been pretty close to them before your period of inactivity.

Might also be taking this highly abbreviated apporach around exam time, good luck!
