After a convo with the Mrs I was wondering howm much money a travel agent makes with commission and whatever? Just curious to be honest

Or do you mean someone employed in a travel agents? A travel consultant? My partner has been a travel consultant for over 20yrs working both self employed and as an employee. In a standard travel agents pay can be as little as the national minimum and rarely pays decent commission these days. Self employed can be more rewarding if you are a good seller however unless you have a large customer base of your own you won't be getting rich quick.

No they don't really. My partner was the best seller in the largest independent travel agent in the country and she didn't make 18k in her last year as an employee.

Thompson employees would be on par with what I've described. My partner has been offered jobs with them before now.

Did she get good holiday deals for your family though mate? Must have been a perk surely that she got some quality discounts or deals?

They make less because they work for a huge corporate  How do you think the company makes all their money?

I work for another member of the Thomson group. The basic wage is low. Commission is good but we have gone through periods where it's been pretty dire to say the least.

Regarding deals, we're just in the process of having concessions looked at/possibly removed. My company doesn't get them at all. The best we get is we can apply for late flight seats for about 40% cheaper but can't take holiday unless it's in the School holidays which doesn't help!

It's not great is it flick!

LW, all we got off our upcoming holiday was the companies commission which was 10%.

My partner has actually been to Dubai, San Francisco and Las Vegas on educational trips this year but she's not had any others for years and again these were largely down to her being a top seller. Many people can work in the industry for years without getting a sniff of a trip away or indeed any other perk.

It's quite interesting when you find out a little more about these kind of roles... People assume they're very lucrative and open up doors to travel the world, when in reality it sounds the opposite.

On the plus side, I've never been so happy working for a company as the one I work for now. I love what I do and find it really fulfilling. The odd trips I do get away I'm so thankful for. I've been to Normandy and Ypres since I've been with the company and learnt heaps  I also bagged some 'cancelled flights' to New York and DC for the price of a name-change fee (but these opportunities are few and far between)

I didn't even realise people still used Travel agents.

Out of interest who uses them? Is it old people who dot have the net etc? Not flaming just curious as I have a few friends here in Geneva that work for Contiki (I think) doing the back packing tours but it seems niche.

Lots of people would rather talk to someone face to face. Especially if you need advice. My mum and pa-in-law still use one because face-to-face they beat any rates they've found on t'internet. It is possible to haggle your way to a good bargain...

Fair enough I guess its probably an age thing. I can't think of a time in the last decade when someone my age group has told me they visited a travel agent. Im 32.

True. I'm just a year younger and likewise, the only time I go into an agent was to pick up brochures for research, not because I would book through them.
That being said, when I've been in travel agents picking up currency, I've seen them busy with 'young' peeps...

    What advice do people need?

Where is hot? Where is the snow? Is Syria cheap at the moment?

I am surprised they still have a presence on the high st.

Also I saw a Thompson superstore the other day. What on earth is one of those? Can you test the holiday out first?!
