Unknown digestive issue still ongoing (6 months), feel crap, gym a problem - what to do?

Basically I've had this ongoing mystery digestive problem for more than 6 months now.

Went to have a tube shoved up my rear end to have a look around and where the specialist expected to find evidence of Colitis or Crohn's disease there was nothing bar some very slight inflammation. I've yet to hear back about what the hell they think it could be. But to top it all, this serious digestive problem I had which was giving me pain, making me feel tired and caused bowel problems doesn't even appear to be bloody real FFS!

I've been struggling in the gym due to it recently - no matter how much I eat I still feel weak and I've even had to drop deadlifts and squats and am instead doing what I can on machines. Then I came down with a cold about a week ago. Might be due to the steroids I was prescribed and taking for the problem (not anabolic in case it confuses anyone) which apparently lowers immunity.

So the worst of the cold has gone. Given how I've been battling with the gym I'm super paranoid about losing my strength but even though the cold has gone, I still have a heavy head and and feel the blood rushing around and am still blowing my nose a lot, but have no sinus problems or anything and don't feel as bad as I did.

My question is... should I be hitting the gym again yet? I'm so paranoid about sitting here and getting fat (I put weight on very easily) whilst my muscle wastes away. I can already see the weight I've put on (my upper body isn't like an upside down triangle if that makes sense). Like I say, there doesn't even appear to be a serious problem with my digestion which I can tell you greatly frustrates me because still feel like utter crap.

It seems so long ago that I was bouncing around the gym and really going for it, screaming my head off like a maniac with my deads and squats and now I can't even imagine doing it. I'd accepted that I could just stick at it until I saw a specialist and they rectified the problem and then I could jump back into things but I've just hit this massive brick wall and even they don't know what's wrong with me an well, it all feels a little pointless if I'm quite honest. :'(

It is unlikely, but coupled with other issues it may have caused a candida overgrowth.

If you get reactions to certain foods, you get brain fog and other digestive symptoms that dont seem to be related, then this may be the issue.

Do a google search on Candidiasis. It may not be your problem, but at least you can rule it out.

Do you know what? that could be it! Thank you!

I have asperger's syndrome - it's a mild form of autism. Autistic individuals have differing kinds/lack of gut flora which also makes them more susceptible to certain digestive problems. The wife did mention this some while back. So if this is the case, what now?

There was, yes. I've been and still am on mesalazine which has stopped that though.

You're on mesalazine and you've not been diagnosed formally with an inflammatory bowel?
How often do you take these and by what route? (Don't worry mate I take mesalazine by the 'other' route daily myself!)

Who diagnosed you as having mild inflammation, and where did they say this is? ie was it at the end of your colon?

    Thanks for getting back James.

No I take the mesalazine orally as it's suspected that there are problems in the gut as well - 800mg 3x daily. Although I did have prednisolone which went the other way!

They haven't actually diagnosed me with anything yet but as an umbrella term I have 'inflammatory bowel problems'; they did some bloodwork and that came back clean. They've seen my stools and took a sample from my behind to analyse the cells from that area and then I saw a specialist to have the camera put up my rear end and he was looking for suspected Colitis or Crohn's but it came up a bit blank. He said they may have to look up my 'right colon' in the future but I thought it was all one big long tube. Surely you don't have a left and a right?

ALL they spotted was a mild inflammation so they're a bit puzzled. He took some samples from inside to analyse and I'm seeing him again on 19th July to talk about it although TBH I don't know what good that's going to do as it's the community hospital so they won't be 'further investigating' things there.

It sounds like you may have a very mid case of proctitis (ie colitis affecting the end bit only) and maybe when they examined you you were on remission. They clearly think there is some inflammation though as they wouldn't have put you on oral mesalazine.

    How are symptoms currently?

They're the worst they've ever been today. Problems just walking about, having to sit down and can't concentrate at all. Mood swings also, really bad.

It actually seems to all be consistent with candida; down to brain fog, lumpy rash on my hands. Unfortunately for some bizarre reason, the medical 'profession' doesn't seem to believe it exists, as ridiculous as that sounds. I really wish it was colitis. Apparently it takes months to get rid of candida and to feel OK again.

Anything ending in 'itis' means inflammation of that tissue/organ. Therefore colon inflammation = colitis. Therefore if they say you have some (albeit small) inflammation there they have effectively said you have colitis.

Bet they tested you on a good day.

Well I wonder why the specialist didn't feel the need to classify it as such. Very odd. The inflammation I think was only in a very small part of the colon.

I'd love to think it was colitis as opposed to candida because then I wouldn't be on a ridiculous diet where I can eat virtually no carbs and can't have coffee and a whole host of other things as it feeds the candida. Can I ask what you think of this whole candida malarky?

I feel for you mate. I had something like this last year which lasted just over four months. Never did get a diagnosis. I was nearly in tears for the first few months. TBH I thought IBS and digestive issues where all exaggerated until I experienced it first hand.

Just hope you get it sorted. James really knows his stuff in this area! Definitely keep on moaning to the docs for another test and to see another specialist.

    What's your stool like?

Pretty normal now. A bit soft but otherwise OK.

Used to be real bad diarrhea with blood in throughout the day but none of that now.

I constantly feel like ****, and have pain on MY right side of my abs, where i presume my small intenstine to be (aswell as left..). This pain can be felt when i move and when i get really full. Could i be looking at the same thing. (lifts / sleep / apetite and psychological stability lost) also getting fatter and fatter O_o. I wouldn't describe it in as much magnitude as groovemister or exactly the same, but similar. I am sitting down in front of my computer and can feel it right now.

Well oral and genital candida are of course very well recognised by the medical profession. What you're referring to is systemic candida which is recognised by some Drs, though there is (to my knowledge) no formal criteria for diagnosis. In my mind, I think it can exist, but more likely only in the immunocompromised.

What I have a (major) problem is the stupid faddy websites that over-hype the condition for no reason other than false credibility or to sell their articles; lthough some 'experts' genuinely do, I feel, think it is a major health problem. I also am not hot on some of the faddy diets, based on absolutely NO eveidence. If I was to suggest a diet for it it would be based on low GI carbs and would include probiotics. It would also exclude junk and processed foods

Can I ask about rash on hands and er... itchy anus. But apparently symptoms of candida which I have but not colitis I believe.

The sites I've been looking at have been free and advocate self help, not to buy things, such as this one: http://www.askshelley.com/ and this: http://www.candidadiet.com/treatment/treatment_diet.shtml and this: http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/article/187.html

Thing is, if it's colitis I could carb up, ram some coffee down my neck and crack on doing by best to fight it. If it's candida and I do that then I make things MUCH worse. I decided to get loads of nutrients in me by way of fruit a few days ago. Fruit = lots more sugar and I got the worst I've been so far after a couple of days of all that fruit.
