Guy I know went vegan about a year ago: he's so skinny now, he looks awful, ill, older,.. like he's got some sort of muscle wasting disease 


I bet his protein choices are poor and/or inadequate. This is not uncommon. If you don't consume sufficient leucine at a meal then protein synthesis will not start no matter what the remainder of your diet is like.

With James on this one.
My partner is vegi and wants to go full vegan, as such we often eat at vegan restaurants (as the food is actually really good).  I usually carry some BCAAs tablets, just pop a few of those with your meal and hey presto, your good.
Now I'm trying to find vegi BCAA tabs as she hates powders...
